Lost in Subtitling? A Study of Humour Translation in the Polish Subtitles of Philomena Cunk Mockumentaries

Niniejsza praca dotyczy problematyki tłumaczenia humoru w tekstach audiowizualnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem napisów. Na wstępie autorka przedstawia główne środki przekazu audiowizualnego, ich charakterystykę i najbardziej rozpoznawalne typy. Przechodząc do kolejnego punktu rozważań, przedstawione zostały ramy koncepcyjne teorii humoru, mające na celu wspomóc zrozumienie jej złożoności oraz rozwikłaniu szeregu definicji dotychczas poruszonych przez wielu badaczy. Następnie omówiony został temat humoru przez pryzmat napisów w tłumaczeniach audiowizualnych, w tym dylematy z nim związane, a także zostały zasugerowane strategie rozwiązywania polemiki w tym obszarze. W dalszej sekcji dyskusji, autorka wykorzystuje metodologię tłumaczenia takich przypadków, do przeanalizowania polskich napisów do serialu Cunk on Earth, aby ostatecznie określić, czy zastosowane w procesie tłumaczenia strategie były w stanie oddać efekt humorystyczny w równym stopniu w jakim było to przekazane w tekście źródłowym.

This paper is dedicated to the topic of translating humour in audiovisual texts, paying a particular attention to the subtitling. As a preliminary point, the author outlines the main audiovisual mediums, their characteristics and the most recognisable types. Moving further to another perspective of this work, a conceptual framework of the humour theoretics is structured, with an aim to assist the work with a grasp of its complexity and to unravel the range of definitions covered thus far by a variety of scholars. This is then followed by the argument addressing the subject of humour through the lens of subtitling in audiovisual translation, including its surrounding dilemma, and proposing a selection of strategies to tackle the problem. Within the next segment of the discourse, the author suggests a methodology of translating such instances found in the Polish subtitles to the TV series Cunk on Earth in order to analyse whether methods and strategies used in the process of translation were able to convey the humoristic effect rendered in the source text.
