Culture Specific Items in the Polish Version of Outlander by DianaGabaldon

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza tłumaczenia elementów nacechowanych kulturowo w polskim przekładzie powieści „Outlander” Diany Gabaldon. Powieść ta zawiera wiele elementów związanych z kulturą Szkocji z XVIII wieku, które mogą być nieznane dla czytelnika docelowego. Praca podzielona jest na dwie główne części. Część pierwsza jest poświęcona teoretycznym rozważaniom na temat tekstów zawierających elementów kulturowe, co z kolei może stanowić problem tłumaczeniowy. Część teoretyczna zawiera również przegląd literatury na temat rozumienia różnych definicji elementów kulturowych, podziałów technik tłumaczeniowych oraz ich znaczenia. Część ta poświęcona jest także omówieniu strategii tłumaczeniowych oraz skupia się na roli tłumacza jako mediatora międzykulturowego. Część praktyczna to analiza wybranych elementów kulturowych pojawiających się w powieści. Omawiane są elementy z kategorii jedzenia, picia oraz tradycyjnego stroju szkockiego. Analiza ta oparta jest na wybranych technikach oraz strategiach tłumaczeniowych, a także porusza temat ich wpływu na odbiór kultury Szkocji XVIII wieku przez odbiorcę docelowego. Praca jest zakończona przez sformułowane wnioski.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the translation of culture-specific items in the Polish translation of the novel “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon. This novel contains several elements related to Scotland’s culture in the 18th century, which may be unknown to the target reader. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is devoted to theoretical considerations of texts containing culture-specific items, which may pose translation problems. Moreover, the theoretical part includes a review of the literature on understanding various definitions of culture-specific items, divisions of translation techniques, and their meaning. This section also discusses translation strategies and focuses on the translator’s role as a cross-cultural mediator. The analytical part is an analysis of selected culture-specific items appearing in the novel. Elements from the beverages, food, and Scottish Highland dress categories are discussed. The analysis is based on selected techniques and translation strategies and their impact on the target readers’ reception of the culture of Scotland of the 18th century. The work is complemented by conclusions.
