Walory turystyczne Reunion
Walory turystyczne Reunion
W niniejszym opracowaniu dokonano wskazania i oceny czynników, które świadczą o wysokiej atrakcyjności turystycznej wsypy, z jednej strony, zaś z drugiej strony ograniczają turystyczne wykorzystanie wyspy. Dominujące znaczenie turystyki aktywnej i eksploracyjnej wynika bezpośrednio z unikatowego ukształtowania terenu, będącego efektem wulkanicznego pochodzenia Réunion. Te same cechy przyrodnicze, które stanowią o atrakcyjności wyspy, generują równocześnie zagrożenia – m.in. erupcje wulkaniczne zamykające szlaki, cyklony tropikalne czy osuwiska.

Réunion is widely regarded as a “paradise” travel destination, but tourism accounts only for 2% of the island’s GDP. This study identifies and evaluates the factors that, on the one hand, contribute to the island’s high tourist appeal and, on the other hand, limit its use as a tourist destination. The primary objective of this thesis is to demonstrate that tourism on the island of Réunion is shaped by the interplay of natural and non-natural factors. To this end, the SWOT analysis method was employed. The analysis and synthesis conducted, supported by field research, points to the interplay of natural and non-natural assets that shape tourism on Réunion. The interdependence of these elements makes Réunion stand out primarily as a destination for active, nature-based, and cultural tourism, rather than mass leisure tourism. In contrast to nearby Mauritius, tourism on the island is based on a different model. The dominant role of active and exploratory tourism stems directly from the island’s unique topography, which is a result of Réunion’s volcanic origin. The varied topography, the presence of active and extinct volcanoes (Piton de la Fournaise, Piton des Neiges), deep calderas (Cilaos, Mafate, Salazie), as well as the high level of endemism in the flora and fauna—protected within a National Park inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List—serve as a magnet for tourists and determine the nature of their activities such as hiking, canyoning, and exploring lava tunnels. The island’s natural attractions are inextricably intertwined with its non-natural attractions. The island’s multicultural identity is reflected in its Creole culture, architecture, and cuisine. Close ties to mainland France also influence the nature of tourism on the island. This results in a predominance of French tourists, a high percentage of VFR (visiting friends and relatives) trips, and European-standard services. The island’s lodging infrastructure—dominated by private accommodations and mountain huts, with a small share of large hotels—supports independent, personalized travel. The study also identified significant barriers and limitations to tourism. The same natural features that make the island attractive also pose threat, e.g.: volcanic eruptions that close trails, tropical cyclones, and landslides. Additional barriers include: a limited number of safe beaches, the difficulties and high costs of building infrastructure in challenging mountainous terrain, and the significant distance from Europe. The SWOT analysis highlights the interplay between natural and non-natural factors and reveals the balance of these conditions that shape tourism in Réunion.
