Human rights issues in the British press. A comparison of the approach of the Guardian and the Daily Mail to selected 21st-century cases

Praca dyplomowa dotyczy zagadnień związanych z prawami człowieka w prasie brytyjskiej dokonanych na podstawie wybranych przypadków w XXI w. przedstawionych w The Guardian i The Daily Mail. Wybór prasy, na podstawie których dokonano analizy koncentruje się na dziennikach posiadających wieloletnia tradycję istnienia oraz ugruntowaną pozycję w zakresie wyrażania opinii. Główny cel badawczy pracy stanowi porównanie podejścia do wybranych aspektów związanych z prawami człowieka na podstawie wyżej wymienionych dzienników oraz określeniu podobieństw i różnic w relacjonowaniu zagadnień związanych z prawami człowieka. W pracy przeanalizowano w jakim zakresie prasa może pozostawać obiektywna w relacjonowaniu zdarzeń a w jakim dostosowuje treść artykułów do opinii swoich docelowych czytelników. W pracy postawiono pytania badawcze czy The Daily Mail prezentuje prawicową ocenę wydarzeń i w jakich aspektach to się przejawia. W odniesieniu do The Guardian poddano analizie czy i w jakim zakresie dziennik przedstawia interpretację wydarzeń w ujęciu lewicowym. Pierwszy z analizowanych przypadków związanych z prawami człowieka dotyczy Shamima Begum (nastolatka wyjechała do Syrii celem przyłączenia się do tzw. Państwa islamskiego czego skutkiem było pozbawienie jej obywatelstwa brytyjskiego przez władze Wielkiej Brytanii) oraz analizy kwestii prawa do obywatelstwa i prawa do sądu. Drugi z przypadków dotyczy Julian Assange (założyciela portal WikiLeaks za pośrednictwem którego anonimowi informatorzy publikowali dokumenty rządowe i korporacyjne celem zwrócenia uwagi na nieprawidłowości) oraz analizy kwestii związanych z wolnością słowa i prasy. Trzeci z przypadków jest związany z the Rwanda Asylum Plan (plan stworzony w ramach polityki imigracyjnej polegający na przemieszczeniu nielegalnych imigrantów i poszukujących azylu do Rwandy celem przeprowadzenia procedur imigracyjnych) oraz analizy kwestii prawa do azylu. Analizę przypadków związanych z kwestiami praw człowieka poprzedza rozdział poświęcony przedstawieniu ogólnych założeń prawnych i instytucjonalnych dotyczących ochrony praw człowieka na poziomie międzynarodowym, europejskim oraz uwzględniającym specyfikę Wielkiej Brytanii w tym obszarze.

The thesis concerns issues related to human rights in the British press based on selected cases in the 21st century presented in The Guardian and The Daily Mail. The selection of press on the basis of which the analysis was made focuses on newspapers with a long tradition of existence and an established position in the field of expressing opinions. The main research objective of the thesis is to compare the approach to selected aspects related to human rights based on the above-mentioned newspapers and to determine the similarities and differences in reporting on issues related to human rights. The thesis analyses to what extent the press adapts the content of articles to the opinions of its target readers. The thesis poses a question whether The Daily Mail presents a right-wing assessment of events and in what aspects this is manifested. In relation to The Guardian, it is analysed whether and to what extent the newspaper presents an interpretation of events from a left-wing perspective. The first of the analysed cases related to human rights concerns Shamima Begum (a teenager who went to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State, which resulted in her being stripped of British citizenship by the UK authorities) and an analysis of the issue of the right to citizenship and the right file an appeal to a court. The second case concerns Julian Assange (founder of the WikiLeaks portal, through which anonymous informants published government and corporate documents in order to draw attention to some breach of law) and an analysis of issues related to freedom of speech and the press. The third case is related to the Rwanda Asylum Plan (a plan created as a part of immigration policy to relocate illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to Rwanda to conduct immigration procedures) and an analysis of the issue within the right to asylum. The analysis of events related to human rights issues is preceded by a chapter devoted to presenting the general legal and institutional assumptions regarding the protection of human rights at the international, European and UK levels in this area.
