Archive of Our Own jako ekosystem twórczości fanowskiej” Analiza wspólnotowych i afektywnych mechanizmów fanfiction na przykładzie „All the Young Dudes

Praca magisterska poświęcona została analizie twórczości fanowskiej na przykładzie platformy Archive of Our Own (AO3) oraz jednego z najpopularniejszych fanfików w fandomie Harry’ego Pottera - All the Young Dudes autorstwa anonimowej twórczyni MsKingBean89. Celem pracy było zbadanie fanfiction rozumianego jako twórczość transformacyjna, a także wskazanie jego roli w budowaniu wspólnotowości i praktyk afektywnych w społecznościach fanowskich. W pierwszej części pracy omówiono teoretyczne ujęcia fanfiction w oparciu o m.in. trójosiowy model Anny Wilson (transformacja, kłusownictwo, afekt). Analizie poddano także problem definicyjny fanfiction, jego statusu jako gatunku literackiego, medium oraz praktyki społecznej, z uwzględnieniem dotychczasowych badań polskich i zagranicznych. W drugiej części AO3 zostało opisane jako ekosystem twórczości fanowskiej -platforma non-profit zbudowana i utrzymywana przez fanów, stanowiąca przestrzeń dla różnorodnych form prac transformacyjnych. Metafora ekosystemu pozwoliła ukazać współdziałanie infrastruktury technicznej z aktywnością użytkowników. Zwrócono uwagę na mechanizmy cyrkulacji treści oraz znaczenie AO3 jako przestrzeni rozwoju kulturowego, w której powstają fanony, style afektywne i języki komunikacji. Trzecia część stanowiła studium przypadku fanfiction All the Young Dudes, które zyskało ogromną popularność w społeczności fanowskiej. Omówiono jego strukturę, tematykę i znaczenie jako queerowego, fix-it fanfiction, rozwijającego niedopowiedziane wątki kanonu. Analiza pokazała, w jaki sposób ATYD generuje kolejne prace fanowskie (tłumaczenia, fanarty, podfiki), inspiruje rozwój nowych tropów i reprezentacji, a także prowadzi do replikacji kulturowej, w której elementy fanfiction zaczynają funkcjonować w fanonie niezależnie od tekstu źródłowego. Analiza krytyczna z użyciem narzędzi analizy literaturoznawczej i medioznawczej przyniosła spodziewane wnioski. Fanfiction w ujęciu transformacyjnym, kłusowniczym i afektywnym stanowi formę partycypacji kulturowej, która nie tylko reinterpretuję dzieła masowej kultury, ale także tworzy silne, inkluzywne wspólnoty. AO3, jako jedno z największych archiwów przechowujących prace tego typu, funkcjonuje jako dynamiczny ekosystem, w którym twórczość i emocje użytkowników współtworzą alternatywną przestrzeń kultury.

The master’s thesis is devoted to the analysis of fanworks, using the Archive of Our Own (AO3) platform and one of the most popular fanfiction in the Harry Potter fandom – All the Young Dudes by the anonymous author MsKingBean89 - as case studies. The aim of the thesis was to examine fanfiction understood as transformative work, as well as to highlight its role in building community and affective practices within fan cultures.

The first part of the thesis discusses theoretical approaches to fanfiction, drawing, among others, on Anna Wilson’s three-axis model (transformation, poaching, affect). It also analyzes the definitional problem of fanfiction, its status as a literary genre, medium, and social practice, with reference to previous Polish and international studies.

The second part describes AO3 as an ecosystem of fan creativity - a non-profit platform built and maintained by fans, providing space for a wide range of transformative works. The ecosystem metaphor made it possible to illustrate the interaction between technical infrastructure and user activity. Attention was given to the mechanisms of content circulation and to AO3’s significance as a space of cultural development, where fanons, affective styles, and languages of communication emerge.

The third part presents a case study of the fanfiction All the Young Dudes, which has gained immense popularity within the fan community. Its structure, themes, and significance as a queer, fix-it fanfiction expanding on unresolved elements of the canon are discussed. The analysis shows how ATYD generates further fan creations (translations, fanart, podfics), inspires the development of new tropes and representations, and contributes to cultural replication, where elements of the fanfiction begin to function in fanon independently of the source text.

Critical analysis using tools of literary and media studies yielded predictable conclusions. Fanfiction, when approached as transformative, poaching, and affective practice, constitutes a form of cultural participation that not only reinterprets works of mass culture but also builds strong, inclusive communities. AO3, as one of the largest archives hosting such works, functions as a dynamic ecosystem in which users’ creativity and emotions co-create an alternative cultural space.
