Bowtruckle, pokkuroija ja nieśmiałek. Valitut irreaaliat J.K. Rowlingin Harry Potterin suomennoksessa ja puolannoksessa

Irrealia stanowią istotną część fikcyjnego świata przedstawionego w literaturze fantasy. Ich wyjątkowość sprawia, że często stwarzają one problemy tłumaczeniowe. Celem mojej pracy magisterskiej jest zbadanie wybranych irrealiów, czyli nazw magicznych stworzeń, w fińskim i polskim przekładzie Harry’ego Pottera J.K. Rowling. We wstępie uzasadniam wybór tematu, a także prezentuję kluczowe informacje na temat Harry’ego Pottera oraz literatury fantasy. Ponadto przedstawiam cele do zrealizowania, materiał badawczy i budowę pracy. W części teoretycznej wyjaśniam, czym są realia i irrealia, oraz w jaki sposób łączą się z Harrym Potterem. Omawiam również znaczenie neologizmów oraz sposoby tworzenia słów w języku fińskim i polskim. Oprócz tego prezentuję klasyfikacje strategii tłumaczeniowych opracowane przez Ritvę Leppihalme i Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego. Część analityczna uwzględnia podział fantastycznych stworzeń na dwie kategorie. Najpierw badam tłumaczenie nazw istniejących już w kulturze, a następnie sprawdzam, jak przełożono nazwy stworzone przez Rowling. W ostatniej części pracy magisterskiej przedstawiam wyniki moich badań.

Irrealia are an important part of the fictional represented world of fantasy literature. Because of their uniqueness they often pose translation problems. The subject of this thesis is the analysis of selected irrealia, i.e. the names of magical creatures, in the Finnish and Polish translations of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. In the introduction, I justify my choice of the topic and present key information about Harry Potter and fantasy literature. Furthermore, I provide the objectives to be achieved, the research material and the structure of the thesis. In the theoretical part, I explain what realia and irrealia are, and how they are linked to Harry Potter. I also discuss the role of neologisms and the ways of forming new words in Finnish and Polish. In addition, I present the classifications of translation strategies developed by Ritva Leppihalme and Krzysztof Hejwowski. The analytical part contains the division of fantastic creatures into two categories. First, I analyse the translation of names already existing in the culture, and then I analyse how the names created by Rowling have been translated into Finnish and Polish. In the last part of the thesis, I provide the results of my research.

Irreaaliat ovat fantasiakirjallisuudessa esitetyn fiktiivisen maailman merkittävä osa. Niiden erikoisuuden takia ne aiheuttavat usein käännösongelmia. Tämän pro gradu -työn tavoitteena on tutkia valittuja irreaalioita eli taikaolentojen nimiä J.K. Rowlingin Harry Potterin suomennoksessa ja puolannoksessa. Johdannossa kerron aiheen valinnasta, Harry Potterista ja fantasiakirjallisuudesta. Esittelen myös tutkimuksen tehtäviä, tutkimusaineistoa ja työn rakennetta. Teoreettisessa osassa selitän, mitkä reaaliat ja irreaaliat ovat ja miten ne liittyvät Harry Potteriin. Käsittelen uudissanojen roolia ja eri tapoja muodostaa sanoja suomen ja puolan kielessä. Esittelen käännösstrategioiden luokitteluja Ritva Leppihalmeen ja Krzysztof Hejwowskin mukaan. Analyyttinen osa sisältää fantasiaolentojen jakoa kahteen ryhmään. Ensin tarkastelen, miten käännettiin kulttuurissa esiintyviä nimiä, ja sen jälkeen, miten käännettiin Rowlingin keksimiä käsitteitä. Pro gradu -työn viimeisessä osassa kerron tutkimuksen tuloksista.
