A comparative linguistic analysis of Samuel Beckett’s selected dramas involving French and English texts. Focus on lexical repetition and formal minimalism

Niniejsza praca dotyczy porównania francuskich i angielskich wersji językowych dramatów irlandzkiego pisarza, dramaturga i poety, Samuela Becketta, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem powtórzeń leksykalnych oraz minimalizmu formy w nich zawartych. Praca składa się z dwóch części: teoretycznej (rozdziały 1, 2 oraz 4) i empirycznej (rozdział 3). Rozdział 1 traktuje o teatrze absurdu, roli ciszy w dwudziestowiecznym dramacie i cechach charakterystycznych języka dramatów Becketta oraz przybliża treść najbardziej znanych sztuk autora. Rozdział 2 wprowadza zagadnienia językoznawstwa korpusowego, omawia metodologię pracy z korpusem w kontekście analizy tekstów literackich oraz podejmuje temat stylistyki korpusowej. Rozdział 3 analizuje trzy najbardziej znane sztuki Becketta w ich francuskich i angielskich wersjach, szczególnie w kontekście powtórzeń leksykalnych (głównie słów pause (un temps), silence (silence) i nothing (rien)). Rozdział 4 zestawia charakterystyczne cechy minimalizmu Becketta z minimalizmem obecnym w takich dziedzinach sztuki jak malarstwo, architektura, muzyka i literatura.

This thesis is concerned with comparing the French and English versions of the dramas of the Irish writer, playwright, and poet, Samuel Beckett, with particular reference to the lexical repetitions and minimalism of form contained therein. The paper consists of two parts: theoretical (Chapters 1, 2, and 4) and empirical (Chapter 3). Chapter 1 deals with the Theatre of the Absurd, the role of silence in twentieth-century drama, the characteristics of the language of Beckett's dramas, and introduces the content of the author's best-known plays. Chapter 2 introduces the issues of corpus linguistics, discusses the methodology of corpus work in the context of the analysis of literary texts, and delves into the issue of corpus stylistics. Chapter 3 analyses three of Beckett's best-known plays in their French and English versions, particularly in the context of lexical repetitions (mainly the words pause (un temps), silence (silence), and nothing (rien)). Chapter 4 juxtaposes the distinctive features of Beckett's minimalism with the minimalism present in artistic fields such as painting, architecture, music and literature.
