The paradigm shift from economy oriented towards growth to sustainable economy that aims to balance economic, social and environmental goals can be observed in many developed countries. This shift is accompanied by increasing social activism and growing stakeholder's expectations towards companies. Getting countinuous approval from stakeholders is becoming necessity for business to remain profitable. The process of continuous negotiations and granting of acceptance from stakeholders has been called social license to operate. The main goal of the article is to present current understanding of social license to operate. The method of a systematic review of the literature has been applied as a basis for critical assessment of the current state of the literature on social licence. The review has been based on articles that present social license to operate in extractive and mining industries. Due to historical development path of these industries and high levels of expectations from its stakeholders, mining and extractive industries offer a unique field to study the concept being reviewed.
