Factors affecting Russia's fighting spirit: evidence from military foreign interventions

Throughout history, Russia has been renowned for its bellicosity. Some of the wars Russia has engaged in were rational, while others were unnecessary. However, regardless of the nature of the conflict, Russia has always demonstrated a strong fighting spirit on the battlefield. Therefore, exploring the causal mechanisms underlying the strength and weakness of Russia's fighting spirit is a fascinating question. It can help us understand for whom Russia has fought throughout history, under what circumstances does Russia's fighting spirit manifest itself more strongly, and when does it manifest itself less strongly? Can the contemporary international community, without violating fundamental principles, simply exploit the causal mechanisms underlying Russia's fighting spirit to curb its expansionist ambitions and ongoing foreign wars? To address these questions, this article explores how six factors—the relative political democracy index, regional sensitivity index, war type, number of allies, and enemy strength—influence Russia's fighting spirit. This study, encompassing numerous historical and modern Russian wars, uses statistical analysis to reveal the patterns of change in Russia's fighting spirit and arrives at surprising conclusions. First, a relatively democratic political atmosphere is not necessarily a good thing for Russia; higher levels of relative democracy lead to stronger Russian fighting spirit. Second, regional sensitivity index and enemy strength are the most important factors influencing Russia's fighting spirit. In regions with high regional sensitivity, Russia is willing to sacrifice everything for war. Once Russia enters a state of war, the stronger the enemy, the stronger Russia's will to fight. Third, in a state of war, Russia is less concerned with the number of allies and enemies. Finally, Russians do not care whether the type of war is just or not. They will massacre their own citizens for national interests, and will not exercise restraint when fighting on foreign territory simply because they are the aggressor. The conclusions of this study pose a powerful challenge to traditional theories and provide a model for the study of democracy and war in similar non-democratic countries.
