Childhood Memories: Translation Analysis of the Graphic Novel Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel

Zaprezentowana praca magisterska, zatytułowana Translation Analysis of the Graphic Novel Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama autorstwa Alison Bechdel, koncentruje się na złożoności związanej z tłumaczeniem powieści graficznych na przykładzie powieści Alison Bechdel Are You My Mother? oraz polskiego przekładu Jesteś Moją Matką? stanowiącego przedmiot badań niniejszej pracy. Praca podzielona jest na dwie części: teoretyczną i praktyczną. Część teoretyczna składa się z dwóch rozdziałów, część analityczna z jednego. Część pierwsza składa się z czterech powiązanych ze sobą podrozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich został poświęcony teorii tłumaczenia zaproponowanej przez Petera Newmarka i jego klasycznemu podejściu do tłumaczenia. W drugiej części, z uwzględnieniem tłumaczenia powieści graficznych i komiksów, zaprezentowane zostało bardziej współczesne podejście Nadine Cellotti. Wyzwania związane z tłumaczeniem powieści graficznych zostały omówione i przedstawione wraz z prezentacją różnych podejść. Ostatnia, czwarta część pierwszego podrozdziału obejmie wyzwania stojące przed polskim tłumaczem książki Are You My Mother? Drugi rozdział skupił się na określeniu powieści graficznej jako gatunku. W pierwszym podrozdziale drugiego rozdziału teoretycznego omówiona została definicja samej powieści graficznej oraz różnorodne podejścia i definicje naukowe. W drugiej części drugiego rozdziału rozważona została różnica między powieścią graficzną a komiksem. Dodatkowo w kolejnym podrozdziale poruszony został aspekt autobiografii, jako kluczowej części twórczości artystycznej Bechdel. Ostatnia część drugiego rozdziału ukazuje cechy psychologiczne i autobiograficzne widoczne we wspomnianym charakterze komiksu. W ostatniej, praktycznej części, wynikającej z dwóch poprzednich, przedstawiona została analiza przekładu powieści graficznej Are You My Mother? oraz jej polskiego tłumaczenia Jesteś Moją Matką? dokonanego przez Paulinę Piotrowską. W czterech podrozdziałach przeprowadzona została analiza przekładu z uwzględnieniem głównych obszarów tematycznych w następującej kolejności: pominięcie i modyfikacja informacji, zachowanie integralności tekstu źródłowego, grawerunek i onomatopeja. W każdym przykładzie wykorzystane zostały panele z oryginalnej wersji angielskiej i polskiego tłumaczenia, gdzie wszystkie zostały dokładnie przeanalizowane.

The thesis presented, entitled Translation Analysis of the Graphic Novel Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel, focuses on the complexities involved in translating graphic novels using the example of Bechdel's novel Are You My Mother? and its Polish translation Jesteś moją matką? Komiksodramat which is the subject of this thesis research. The work was divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part consisted of two chapters, the analytical part of one. The first part consisted of four closely related subsections. The first was devoted to the theory of translation proposed by Peter Newmark and his classical approach to translation. The second section, with a focus on the translation of graphic novels and comic books, presented Nadine Cellotti's more contemporary approach. The challenges of translating graphic novels were discussed and presented along with a presentation of different approaches. The final, fourth part of the first subsection covered the challenges faced by the Polish translator of Are You My Mother? The second chapter focused on defining the graphic novel as a genre. The first subsection of the second theoretical chapter discusses the definition of the graphic novel itself and the various scholarly approaches and definitions. The second section of the second chapter considered the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book. In addition, the following subsection addressed the aspect of autobiography as a key part of Bechdel's artistic activity. The last part of the second chapter showed the psychological and autobiographical features evident in the aforementioned character of comics. The final, practical section, stemming from the previous two, presents an analysis of the translation of the graphic novel Are You My Mother? and its Polish translation Jesteś Moją Matką? by Paulina Piotrowska. In four subsections, an analysis of the translation was carried out, taking into account the main thematic areas in the following order: omission and modification of information, preservation of the integrity of the source text, engraving and onomatopoeia. In each example, panels from the original English version and the Polish translation were used, where all of them were carefully analysed.
