English-Polish Terminological Dictionary of Carpentry Tools

Niniejsza praca ma na celu opracowanie angielsko-polskiego słownika terminologicznego obejmującego nazwy wybranych narzędzi stosowanych w stolarstwie oraz przedstawienie teoretycznych podstaw leksykologicznych i leksykograficznych stanowiących fundament dla jego merytorycznego i strukturalnego ukształtowania. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy pełni funkcję teoretycznego wprowadzenia do problematyki leksykografii i leksykologii, prezentując definicje, zakres przedmiotowy oraz kluczowe założenia obu subdyscyplin językoznawczych. Omówione zostało również pojęcie metaleksykografii, a także teoria pola semantycznego jako podstawę porządkowania leksyki w oparciu o relacje znaczeniowe. Rozdział drugi stanowi analizę struktury słownika jako dzieła leksykograficznego, z uwzględnieniem jego funkcji komunikacyjnych i poznawczych, etapów opracowania oraz zasad organizacji treści na poziomie makro- i mikrostrukturalnym. Zaprezentowano również typologię słowników według kryteriów językowych, tematycznych i formalnych, a także omówiono cechy charakterystyczne słowników terminologicznych, które stanowią bezpośrednią podstawę dla realizacji części empirycznej niniejszej pracy. Rozdział trzeci obejmuje część praktyczną pracy, w której przedstawiono metodologię opracowania słownika oraz opisano kryteria doboru terminów. Główna część rozdziału to angielsko-polski słownik narzędzi stolarskich, uporządkowany w pięciu tematycznych gniazdach leksykalnych, co sprzyja przejrzystości i zrozumieniu relacji funkcjonalnych między narzędziami. Niniejszy słownik stanowi próbę uzupełnienia luki w obszarze angielsko-polskiej terminologii stolarskiej oraz praktycznej implementacji założeń teorii leksykograficznych, oferując narzędzie o potencjalnym zastosowaniu w działalności translatorskiej, dydaktycznej oraz praktyce zawodowej związanej z rzemiosłem technicznym.

This thesis presents the development of an English-Polish terminological dictionary comprising selected names of tools used in carpentry, alongside a theoretical discussion of the lexicological and lexicographic foundations essential to its conceptual and structural design. The work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides a theoretical introduction to the fields of lexicography and lexicology, outlining their definitions, scope of inquiry, and core assumptions as linguistic subdisciplines. Particular attention is given to the notion of metalexicography, as well as to the theory of semantic fields, which serves as a framework for organizing vocabulary according to semantic relations. The second chapter examines the structure of the dictionary as a lexicographic product, considering its communicative and cognitive functions, stages of compilation, and the principles governing its macrostructural and microstructural organization. The chapter also presents a typology of dictionaries based on linguistic, thematic, and formal criteria and offers a detailed account of terminological dictionaries, which form the methodological basis for the practical component of the study. Chapter three contains the practical part of the thesis, outlining the methodology used in compiling the dictionary and describing the criteria for the selection and classification of terms. The core of this chapter is the English-Polish dictionary of carpentry tools, organized into five thematic lexical clusters, facilitating clarity and understanding of the functional relationships between tools. This dictionary seeks not only to fill a gap in bilingual carpentry terminology but also to demonstrate the practical application of lexicographic theory. As such, it offers a potentially useful resource for translators, educators, and practitioners engaged in technical crafts.
