Życie społeczne i religijne żołnierzy późnego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego (IV – V w.) w świetle łacińskich inskrypcji chrześcijańskich

Okres późnego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego (IV – V w.) stanowił czas poważnych przemian, spośród których jednymi z wielu były reformy wojskowe i chrystianizacja państwa. Przemiany te istotnie wpłynęły na warunki życia społecznego i religijnego żołnierzy, tworząc odmienne od wcześniejszych warunki codziennej egzystencji, co znajduje swoje odbicie w źródłach, w tym epigraficznych. Poniższa praca podejmuje próbę zbadania i zobrazowania okoliczności życia społecznego i religijnego chrześcijańskich żołnierzy późnorzymskiej armii w oparciu o pozostawione przez nich lub ich rodziny łacińskie inskrypcje, jak też stanowić ma przyczynek do dalszych badań w tym kierunku w oparciu o źródła epigraficzne. W badaniu przeprowadzono analizę treści inskrypcji oraz elementów ich kontekstu archeologicznego takich jak ich lokalizacja. W rezultacie praca prezentuje więzi społeczne łączące żołnierzy z ich rodzinami i towarzyszami broni, przedstawia silne powiązanie i przenikanie się sfery cywilnej i militarnej w armii późnego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu przez żołnierzy świadomości szczególności swojego zawodu oraz wskazuje na wykorzystanie symboliki chrześcijańskiej jako przejaw religijności żołnierzy, zaznaczając jednak przy tym, iż nie jest ona ograniczona wyłącznie do sfer militarnych.

The period of the Late Roman Empire (4th–5th centuries) was a time of profound transformations, among which military reforms and the Christianization of the state were particularly significant. These changes had a considerable impact on the social and religious conditions of soldiers’ lives, creating circumstances of daily existence different from earlier times, as reflected in various sources, including epigraphic ones. The following paper attempts to examine and illustrate the circumstances of the social and religious life of Christian soldiers in the Late Roman army, based on Latin inscriptions left by them or their families. It is also intended as a contribution to further research in this area drawing on epigraphic sources. The research involved an analysis of the content of the inscriptions and of elements of their archaeological context, such as their location. As a result, this paper highlights the social ties linking soldiers with their families and comrades-in-arms, demonstrates the strong interconnection and overlap between the civilian and military spheres in the army of the Late Roman Empire, while also emphasizing the soldiers’ awareness of the distinctiveness of their profession. Furthermore, it points to the use of Christian symbolism as an expression of soldiers’ religiosity, while noting that it was not limited exclusively to the military sphere.
