Translating proper names in H.P. Lovecraft's horror stories

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest zbadanie trudnego zadania tłumaczenia nazw własnych w literaturze grozy na podstawie opowiadań H.P. Lovecrafta. Praca składa się z części teoretycznej i praktycznej. W pierwszym rozdziale poruszono temat trudności sklasyfikowania literatury grozy, rozwiano błędne przekonania otaczające ten gatunek literacki i spróbowano scharakteryzować podgatunki weird fiction i kosmicznego horroru (zwanego lovecraftowskim), w których głownie tworzył H.P. Lovecraft. Następny rozdział koncentruje się na tematyce nazw własnych i stara się przedstawić ich relacje z kulturą, a także cechy charakterystyczne, rodzaje i najpopularniejsze techniki tłumaczeniowe wykorzystywane do ich przekładu w dziełach literackich. Trzeci rozdział został poświęcony analizie przekładów trzech opowiadań Lovecrafta w tłumaczeniu Macieja Płazy [2012] i Ryszardy Grzybowskiej [1983]. Nazwy własne w tłumaczeniu zostały podzielone na cztery grupy ze względu na ich rodzaj. Pierwsza grupa to antroponimy, druga grupa to toponimy, trzecia chrematonimy i ideonimy, a czwarta to teonimy. Zebrane w analizie nazwy własne zostały wybrane ze względu na różne podejścia tłumaczy do ich przetłumaczenia. Dodatkowo wybór nazw własnych oparty był na ich znaczeniu w kreowaniu świata przedstawionego oraz budowaniu atmosfery grozy, co mogło stanowić szczególne wyzwanie tłumaczeniowe. Przeprowadzona analiza przedstawia, które techniki tłumaczeniowe zostały zastosowane w przekładzie nazw własnych i dowodzi, że istnieją różnice między starszym a nowszym tłumaczeniem dzieł Lovecrafta.

The aim of this dissertation is to explore the challenging task of translating proper names in horror literature based on H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories. This thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical section. The first chapter addresses the difficulty of classifying horror literature, resolves misconceptions surrounding this literary genre, and attempts to characterise the subgenres of weird fiction and cosmic horror (known as Lovecraftian) in which H.P. Lovecraft mainly created. The next chapter focuses on the subject of proper names and attempts to present their characteristics, as well as their relation to the notion of culture, their types, and the most popular translation techniques used for their accurate translation in literary works. The third chapter is focused on the analysis of three short stories translations by Maciej Płaza [2012] and Ryszarda Grzybowska [1983]. Proper names have been divided into groups according to their type. The first group is anthroponyms, the second group is toponyms, the third group is chrematonyms and ideonyms, and the fourth group is theonyms. The proper names collected in the analysis were selected based on the different approaches to their translation, as well as their world-building significance and the capability of evoking an atmosphere of horror, which could pose a unique translation challenge. The conducted analysis presents which translation techniques were used in the translation of proper names and proves that there are differences between the older and newer translations of Lovecraft’s works.
