Representations of male characters in selected young adult adventure and romance fiction: a corpus-based comparison

W ciągu ostatnich lat literatura Young Adult (literatura młodzieżowa) stała się jednym z najpopularniejszych gatunków literackich wśród nastolatków i młodych dorosłych. Jej odbiorcami są zarówno kobiety, jak i mężczyźni, choć preferencje czytelnicze często zależą od konkretnego podgatunku. Literatura ta ma bogatą tematykę i może wpływać na sposób postrzegania siebie oraz relacji międzyludzkich przez młodych czytelników. Celem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie sposobu przedstawiania postaci męskich w młodzieżowych książkach przygodowych i romansowych. Do tego badania stworzono dwa korpusy składające się łącznie z sześciu książek. W części teoretycznej opisano pojęcie literatury młodzieżowej oraz męskości. Przedstawiono również badania dotyczące reprezentacji płci w literaturze oraz zastosowania metod korpusowych w analizie tekstów. W części empirycznej przedstawiono metodologię, wyniki analiz częstości, kolokacji oraz konkordancji oraz ich interpretacje. Wyniki wskazują, że w książkach przygodowych postacie męskie są przedstawiane jako silne, odważne i skoncentrowane na przetrwaniu. Natomiast w literaturze romansowej postacie męskie są częściej przedstawiane w kontekście uczuć, relacji międzyludzkich oraz kontaktu fizycznego.

In recent years, Young Adult literature has become one of the most popular literary genres among teenagers and young adults. Its readers include both women and men, although reading preferences often depend on the specific subgenre. This literature covers a wide range of themes and may influence how young readers perceive themselves and interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study is to compare the representation of male characters in YA adventure and romance novels. For this research, two corpora were created, consisting of a total of six books. The theoretical part of the study discusses the concepts of YA literature and masculinity. It also presents research on gender representation in literature and corpus-based studies. The empirical part presents the methodology, the results of frequency, collocation, and concordance analyses, and their interpretations. The findings indicate that male characters in the YA adventure novels are portrayed as strong, brave, and focused on survival. In contrast, in the YA romance novels, the emphasis is placed on emotions, interpersonal relationships, and physical contact.
