Migration: An axis of dispute or a potential point of enhanced cooperation?

Over the last 20 years migration has featured in the political dispute between Poland and Germany. The main goal of the chapter is to examine these manifestations of dispute between Poland and Germany in relation to migration in the context of this volume’s three explanatory categories, and to reflect on what they follow from (assuming that the historical legacy and asymmetry are potentially important factors in this respect) and whether in the future it will be possible for the two states to present a joint position on migration policy. Reflecting geographical proximity as well as mutual economic and social links, migration will continue to be an important element of political discussion between the two countries. The countries should thus be interested in managing migration in the most effective way. However, if this proves impossible, it will be crucial to develop a mechanism for ensuring rapid reaction to potential problems and resolving them.
