Mediating American culture through drama activities in English language teaching at the second educational stage

Niniejsza praca bada temat mediacji kultury amerykańskiej poprzez metody dramy w nauczaniu języka angielskiego na drugim etapie edukacyjnym. Celem pracy jest opracowanie materiałów dydaktycznych, które umożliwią nauczycielom wdrażanie aktywnych metod z wykorzystaniem aktywności teatralnych dla uczniów na poziomie A2/A2+. Materiały te mają na celu zademonstrowanie przydatności i znaczenia mediacji kultury amerykańskiej na lekcjach języka angielskiego. Część teoretyczna pracy składa się z wielu aspektów, które wyjaśniają zagadnienia związane z materiałem dydaktycznym. Część teoretyczna omawia działania językowe, które młodzi uczniowie rozwijają w procesie nauczania języka angielskiego, a także nauczanie kultury w kontekście kultury amerykańskiej. Następnie szczegółowo omówiono temat mediacji, w szczególności jej rodzaje i mediację kulturową. Na koniec opisano grupę docelową korzystającą z materiałów, uczniów na drugim etapie edukacyjnym, oraz wykorzystanie metod dramy na lekcjach językowych. Stworzony materiał dydaktyczny koncentruje się na scenariuszu sztuki o tradycji Święta Dziękczynienia, który jest przeznaczony przede wszystkim do zajęć pozalekcyjnych, mających na celu wystawienie przedstawienia w języku obcym, ale może również służyć jako tekst dramatyczny do zadań na lekcjach językowych. Materiał podzielony jest na dwie części: dla nauczyciela i dla ucznia, ponieważ obie strony mają różne zadania podczas inscenizacji sztuki. Aktywności teatralne to skuteczna metoda nauczania języka angielskiego, oparta na podejściu językowo-kulturowej mediacji, łącząca rozwój kompetencji językowych młodych uczniów z poznawaniem elementów kultury obcej.

This thesis investigates the topic of mediating American culture through drama activities in English language teaching at the second educational stage. The aim of this study is to develop teaching materials that will enable teachers to implement active methods using drama activities for students at the A2/A2+ language proficiency level. This material aims to demonstrate the usefulness and relevance of mediating American culture in English language lessons. The theoretical section of the work consists of multiple aspects to clarify issues related to the teaching material. The theoretical section discusses the language activities that young learners develop during the process of English language teaching, as well as the teaching of culture in the context of American culture. Afterwards, the topic of mediation is discussed in detail, particularly types of mediation and cultural mediation. Finally, the target age group using the material, students at the second stage of education, is described, along with the use of drama activities in language lessons. The created teaching material focuses on a play script about the tradition of Thanksgiving, which is primarily intended for extracurricular activities aimed at staging a play in a foreign language, but can also serve as a dramatic text for language lesson tasks. This material is divided into two parts: the teacher's and the student's, as these two sides have different tasks when it comes to staging the play. Drama activities are an effective method of teaching English through a language and culture mediation approach, combining the development of young learners' linguistic competences with the experience of elements of a foreign culture.
