Shakespeare’s Verbal Humour in Selected Polish Translations of Much Ado About Nothing

Niniejsza praca zajmuje się analizą humoru werbalnego w wybranych polskich przekładach komedii Wiele hałasu o nic autorstwa Williama Szekspira. Pierwszy rozdział pracy ma na celu wyjaśnienie teorii niezbędnej do przeprowadzenia analizy, opisuje m.in. formy humoru, teorie humoru, techniki przekładu oraz przedstawia materiał źródłowy, a także cechy dramatu i jego tłumaczenia. Drugi rozdział pracy przeprowadza analizę trzech fragmentów sztuki Szekspira. Każdy fragment analizowany jest w osobnym podrozdziale z pomocą Ogólnej Teorii Humoru Werbalnego, pozwalającej m.in. na przedstawienie mechanizmów logicznych, na których opierają się żarty. Ponadto, z pomocą tej samej teorii, analizowane są analogiczne fragmenty z polskich przekładów autorstwa Jana Komierowskiego, Jana Kasprowicza i Stanisława Barańczaka. Ma to na celu zbadanie jak zmieniało się podejście do tłumaczenia Szekspira, jakie techniki wybierali tłumacze i jak ich decyzje wpływają na odbiór sztuki. Co więcej, wyżej wymieniona teoria humoru pozwala na porównanie oryginalnych żartów i ich przekładów, a tym samym na ocenę skuteczności ich odwzorowania w tekście docelowym.

The aim of this thesis is to analyse verbal humour in selected Polish translations of William Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing. The first chapter explains theories needed for the analysis, it describes forms of humour, theories of humour, and translation techniques as well as presents the research material together with the characteristics of drama and its translation. The second chapter analyses three fragments from Shakespeare’s play. Each fragment is analysed in a separate subchapter with the help of the General Theory of Verbal Humour, which allows for presenting the logical mechanisms on which the jokes are based. Moreover, the corresponding fragments from Polish translations made by Jan Komierowski, Jan Kasprowicz, and Stanisław Barańczak are analysed with the help of the same theory. The purpose is to examine how the approach to translating Shakespeare has been changing, which techniques the translators chose, and how their decisions could affect the reception of the play. What is more, the previously mentioned theory of humour allows for the comparison of the original jokes and their translations and thereby for assessing the effectiveness of their rendition in the target text.
