The role of Turkey in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia (2014-2022)

Abstrakt (EN)

Due to the economic crises in the world, hot conflicts occur in fragile regions and frozen problems in those regions emerges again. The problems in critical regions that could not be solved and frozen after 1 st and 2 nd World Wars and during cold war era re-created the conditions of the depression period before the 1st World War with the onset of global economic crises. The aim of this study is to determine whether Turkey plays an active role in the region by considering its strong historical ties with Ukraine and Russia and its active attitude. In order to reach the goal, the study has been made on the basis of positivism/rationalism theories. Qualitative research methods were used within the scope of the study, and using primarily PESTLE Analysis; political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal situation assessments were made. Subsequently, a SWOT analysis was made considering the current situation. The strengths and weaknesses of Turkey, Ukraine and Russia were evaluated, and opportunities and threats were revealed in this context. Following PESTLE and SWOT analysis, effective factors were determined. According to determined effective factors Turkey’s role in conflict was evaluated for Ukraine and Russian Federation. As a result of the research, it has been concluded that Turkey has made a significant contribution to crisis management in proportion to its national power level and can effectively fulfill its role as a regional actor.
