This bachelor’s thesis analyses the literary construction of the protagonist, Doris, in the socio-cultural context of the Weimar Republic in the 1930s. Its aim is to examine the tension between the dreams of social advancement and the harsh reality of Berlin during the Great Depression. Drawing on the theories of Siegfried Kracauer, Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler, the thesis demonstrates how a chronic lack of cultural and economic capital determines the protagonist’s life choices. It analyses three key areas: the form of the fictional diary as a tool for the protagonist’s self-creation, the pursuit of unattainable “glamour” (symbolised by the stolen fur coat), and the instrumental relationships with men, which serve as a cynical survival strategy. The thesis argues that the protagonist’s evolution from a superficial performance of femininity to an acceptance of a modest life reflects her development and search for authenticity. The analysis concludes by pointing out that Keun’s novel offers a nuanced literary reflection of social relations in Germany in the early 1930s, corresponding to the sociological diagnoses of the era.
