Nice and Accurate Analysis of Idiolects Used by Literary Characters in the Polish and Italian Translations of Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza dialogów w powieści Good Omens Terry’ego Pratchetta i Neila Gaimana a także ich tłumaczeń na język polski i włoski. Analizie poddane zostały dialogi trzech postaci: Azirafala, Crowley’a i Shadwella. Celem pracy jest udowodnienie, że język osobniczy (idiolekt) bohaterów literackich spełnia określone role w narracji, a w związku z tym powinien zostać zachowany w tłumaczeniu. Analiza pokazuje cechy charakterystyczne idiolektu każdej postaci, uwzględniając rejestr, słownictwo, struktury gramatyczne, a także szczególny zapis graficzny słów. Po wyodrębnieniu poszczególnych elementów praca bada, czy ich tłumaczenie jest adekwatne. Po dokonaniu wskazuje się poprawne wybory tłumaczeniowe, jak i wiele pominięć, które skutkowały spłyceniem i zubożeniem lingwistycznej charakterystyki bohaterów. W niektórych przypadkach zaproponowane zostały alternatywne tłumaczenia. W pracy poruszone zostały również kwestie dotyczące tłumaczenia literackiego, definicji i roli idiolektu, a także przedstawiona została metodologia warsztatu tłumacza.

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of the dialogues in Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's novel Good Omens, as well as their translations into Polish and Italian. The dialogues of three characters were analysed: Azirafal, Crowley and Shadwell. The aim of the thesis is to prove that the idiolect of literary characters fulfils specific roles in the narrative and should therefore be preserved in translation. The analysis shows the characteristic features of each character's idiolect, taking into account register, vocabulary, grammatical structures and the specific spelling of words. After identifying the individual elements, the thesis examines whether their translation is adequate. Once this has been done, the correct translation choices are indicated, as well as many omissions that resulted in a flattening and impoverishment of the linguistic characteristics of the characters. In some cases, alternative translations are proposed. The thesis also addresses issues related to literary translation, the definition and role of idiolect, and presents the methodology of the translator's craft.
