Manifestations of Trauma in the Works of Doris Lessing

Praca ukazuje twórczość Doris Lessing w świetle teorii traumy. Koncepcja traumy jest tu oparta na najnowszych kryteriach diagnostycznych dla stresu post-traumatycznego jak i wiedzy z zakresu tzw. trauma studies wyrastających na styku nauk takich jak psychologia, socjologia, historia i teoria literatury. Ukazanie powieści Lessing z perspektywy teorii traumy ma na celu udowodnienie, że trauma stanowi nieodłączny element obrazu cywilizacji proponowanego przez autorkę. Innymi słowy, celem dysertacji jest wskazanie takich cech narracji, które odsyłają twórczość Lessing bezpośrednio do teorii traumy, co rzuca nowe światło na eksperymenty formalne w jej powieściach.

This dissertation aims to discuss Doris Lessing’s fiction within the framework of trauma studies in order to present it as a profound statement on twentieth century human experience. The concept of trauma in the thesis is defined according to theoretical developments in the field of psychoanalysis and psychology, as outlined in the diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as interdisciplinary trauma studies, which arose on a shared ground of such sciences as psychology, sociology, history and literary studies. Several of Lessing’s novels display features typical of trauma narratives even if particular traumatic content seems to be elusive. The multitude of the writer’s concerns and the complexity of forms and styles of her novels encourage an analysis within the framework of trauma studies which sheds new light on these important aspects of Lessing’s writing.
