A study of politeness strategies used in electronic discourse – based on posts in the discussion forum Translatorscafé

Celem pracy jest analiza strategii grzecznościowych, które są stosowane w dyskursie elektronicznym. Podstawą badania są wpisy na form dyskusyjnym TranslatorsCafé. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawione zostały charakterystyczne cechy języka używanego w Internecie oraz zawarto ogólną charakterystykę forów dyskusyjnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem forum TranslatorsCafé. Drugi rozdział jest poświęcony grzeczności językowej. Przedstawiono zwłaszcza podział na strategie grzecznościowe na podstawie kategoryzacji Browna i Levinsona. Ukazane są również czynniki warunkujące użycie danej strategii. Został wspomniany również koncept niegrzeczności językowej. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawiona jest analiza strategii grzecznościowych na podstawie wpisów na forum dyskusyjnym TranslatorsCafé. Dostrzec można znaczącą przewagę strategii zwanych positive politeness strategy oraz negative politeness strategy. Z analizy wynika również, że strategie są często ze sobą łączone.Jednym z kluczowych wniosków jest to, że lingwiści i tłumacze stosują na forum strategie grzecznościowe w celach instrumentalnych, a nawet manipulacyjnych. Ponadto, pomimo dużej wiedzy językowej, zdarza im się w nieprawidłowy sposób używać owych strategii, na przykład poprzez ich nadużywanie, co może prowadzić do nieporozumień lub konfliktów.

The purpose of the study is to analyse the politeness strategies that are used in electronic discourse. The basis of the study is posts on the TranslatorsCafé discussion forum. The first chapter presents the characteristic features of the language used on the Internet and includes a general characterization of discussion forums, with particular emphasis on the TranslatorsCaféf orum. The second chapter is devoted to linguistic politeness. In particular, a breakdown of politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson's categorization is presented. The factors determining the use of a particular strategy are also shown. The concept of linguistic impoliteness is also mentioned. The third chapter presents an analysis of politeness strategies on the basis of posts on the TranslatorsCafé discussion forum. It is possible to notice a significant predominance of strategies called positive politeness strategy and negative politeness strategy. The analysis also shows that the strategies are often combined with each other. A key conclusion is that linguists use politeness strategies in the forum for instrumental and even manipulative purposes. Moreover, in spite of their great linguistic knowledge, they happen to use these strategies incorrectly, for example by overusing them, which can lead to misunderstandings or conflicts.
