Analysis of Humour Translation: Polish Subtitles and Voiceover Adaptations in the American TV Series “Two and a Half Men

Głównym przedmiotem badań jest humor i wątki humorystyczne zawarte w pierwszych trzech sezonach amerykańskiego serialu telewizyjnego „Dwóch i pół”. Podstawowym celem tego specyficznego badania jest porównanie obu polskich tłumaczeń w formie napisów i lektora. Rozdział poświęcony praktycznej części pracy następuje po rozdziałach teoretycznych, których najbardziej podstawowym celem jest wyjaśnienie, czym jest tłumaczenie audiowizualne i humor w dziedzinie przekładu. Pierwszy rozdział definiuje ogólną kwestię tłumaczenia, a drugi rozdział obejmuje temat tłumaczenia audiowizualnego. W kolejnym rozdziale dogłębnie omówiono trzy główne techniki dotyczące AVT. Czwarty rozdział pracy obejmuje specyficzne cechy tłumaczenia w serialach telewizyjnych, a także wyzwania wynikające z takich problemów. Tematem ostatniego rozdziału zawartego w teoretycznej części badań jest humor, jego przekładalność i specjalne wymagania obecne w procesie tłumaczenia. Rozdział szósty, będący jednocześnie ostatnim w całej rozprawie, zawiera podane przykłady humorystycznych tekstów i żartów z serialu, ocenę tłumaczenia oraz porównanie dwóch polskich wersji dostarczonych przez adaptatorów.

The main subject matter of the research is humor and humorsitic lines contained in the first three seasons of the American television series ”Two and a Half Men”. The primary aim of this specific study is the comparison of both Polish translations under the form of subtitles and voice-over. The chapter devoted to the practical part of the thesis follows the theoretical chapters that the most fundamental objective is to explain what is audiovisual translation and humor in the field of translation. The first chapter defines the general question of translation with the second chapter covering the subject of audiovisual translation. In the subsequent chapter the main three techniques regarding AVT are discussed deeply. The fourth section of the thesis covers the specific characteristics of translation in the TV series and, furthermore, the challenges arising from such problems. The subject of the ast chapter included in the theoretical part of the research stands for humor, its translatability and the special requirements being present throughout the process of translation. The sixth chapter, being at the same time the last section in the entire thesis, includes given examples of humoristic lines and jokes from the series, the evaluation of the translation and the comparison between two Polish versions provided by adapters.
