Audiovisual Translation of Humor and Colloquial Language in the Polish Dubbed and Subtitled Versions of the Series “Agatha All Along”

Celem niniejszej pracy zatytułowanej „Tłumaczenie audiowizualne humoru i języka potocznego w polskim dubbingu i napisach do serialu Agatha All Along” jest porównanie wybranych przykładów języka potocznego i humoru w wyżej wymienionym serialu z ich tłumaczeniem w formie napisów i dubbingu na język polski. W rozdziale pierwszym przedstawiono podstawowe zagadnienia związane z przekładem: jego definicje, rodzaje, problematykę ekwiwalencji i nieprzetłumaczalności, a także techniki i strategie stosowane w praktyce translatorskiej. Rozdział drugi koncentruje się na tłumaczeniu audiowizualnym. Zawiera definicję tego typu przekładu oraz opisuje jego główne formy, takie jak napisy, dubbing i revoicing. Omówiono również specyfikę oraz strategie związane z tłumaczeniem treści audiowizualnych. W rozdziale trzecim analizowane są cechy języka potocznego i humoru. Przedstawiono ich definicje i sklasyfikowano techniki wykorzystywane w tłumaczeniu tego typu treści w mediach audiowizualnych. Czwarty rozdział stanowi część praktyczną pracy i skupia się na analizie tłumaczenia serialu Agatha All Along. Opisano tu korpus badawczy oraz zastosowaną metodologię. W dwóch osobnych podrozdziałach przeanalizowano wybrane przykłady z serialu pod kątem technik użytych do tłumaczenia języka potocznego oraz humoru zarówno w wersji dubbingowej, jak i w napisach. Ostatni podrozdział zawiera podsumowanie wyników analizy.

The aim of this thesis, entitled “Audiovisual Translation of Humour and Colloquial Language in the Polish Dubbing and Subtitles of the Series Agatha All Along”, is to compare selected examples of colloquial language and humour in the aforementioned series with their Polish translations in the form of subtitles and dubbing. The first chapter presents the fundamental issues related to translation: its definitions, types, the problems of equivalence and untranslatability, as well as techniques and strategies used in translation practice. The second chapter focuses on audiovisual translation. It provides a definition of this type of translation and describes its main forms, such as subtitles, dubbing, and revoicing. The chapter also discusses the specificity and strategies involved in the translation of audiovisual content. The third chapter analyses the features of colloquial language and humour. It presents their definitions and classifies the techniques used in the translation of such content in audiovisual media. The fourth chapter constitutes the practical part of the thesis and focuses on the analysis of the translation of the series Agatha All Along. It describes the research corpus and the applied methodology. In two separate subchapters, selected examples from the series are analysed in terms of the techniques used to translate colloquial language and humour - both in the dubbed version and in the subtitles. The final subchapter contains a summary of the findings.
