The article reviews a selection of research studies into the benefits that city residents derive from urban green spaces. Starting from the concept of ecosystem services, we point out the influence of urban green areas on the health of the population, and describe engagement in social interaction and lifestyle (e.g. sports activities). We also point out that the quality of green spaces and their accessibility are important variables. Finally, we indicate the positive aspects of participatory management of green areas in cities.
