Zostały zachowane natomiast m.in. płynność w należeniu do plemienia (łatwiejsza niż kiedykolwiek możliwość zmiany społeczności), wspólny język oraz możliwość identyfikacji członków plemienia.

This paper, ‘Tribes in the Age of Social Media: Mechanisms for Forming and Maintaining Bonds in the One Direction and Taylor Swift Fandoms’, focuses on identifying similarities and differences with respect to traditional tribes, drawing on the theory presented by Michel Maffesoli in his book 'The Time of Tribes. The Decline of Individualism in Postmodern Societies’. The analysis examines the fandoms of the aforementioned artists – their ways of forming relationships, communicating, identifying with one another, and performing rituals – within the online environment. The author demonstrates how these aspects vary depending on the fandom and the social media platform it uses. The argument presented is based primarily on literature relating to the concepts of tribalism, neo-tribalism and the formation of relationships in contemporary society, as well as material sourced from online platforms and made available by idols or fans. Based on observations of the behaviour of both fan communities, it can be concluded that the phase of seeking out groups and actively participating in community life is giving way to increasing individualism. Due to ongoing technological development, the use of social media platforms is geared more towards the individual user than the group. Belonging to a ‘tribe’ demands less and less of its members, and the community itself is merely an addition to everyday life, an escape from problems, a moment of entertainment. The characteristics identified by Maffesoli – systematic rituality, strong emotional bonds, a sense of belonging and relationships – are becoming less and less noticeable. What has been preserved, however, includes fluidity in tribal membership (the ability to change communities is easier than ever), a shared language and the ability to identify members of the tribe. The changing reality of the internet has a significant impact on the way fan communities function. The concept of tribalism is constantly evolving, though it continues to seek to satisfy the human need for belonging, security and the formation of relationships.
