The master's thesis is dedicated to the role and functioning of the Prison Service in Poland. It consists of three main parts, each focusing on different aspects of this topic. The first chapter addresses the evolution of imprisonment, discussing definitions and theories related to incarceration. It analyzes how the conditions of serving a sentence have changed over time and presents how imprisonment is regulated within the Polish legal system. It also describes the structure and functioning of the Polish prison system. The second chapter examines the Prison Service as a component of the state's security system. It discusses the history of the Prison Service, including its development and changes over the centuries, as well as its legal status within the correctional system. The internal organization and hierarchy of the Prison Service are outlined, alongside its functions and tasks, highlighting the main roles and responsibilities in the context of state security. The third chapter characterizes the profession of a Prison Service officer. It analyzes the requirements and professional predispositions necessary for those wishing to work in the Prison Service, including the qualifications and traits expected. The chapter also details the course of professional training, the authorities of the Prison Service, and the challenges faced by its employees. It discusses the difficulties and issues that officers must confront in their daily work. The aim of the thesis is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of the Prison Service in Poland from both a legal and practical perspective.
