Analysis of Polish lyrics translations of selected contemporary worship songs by Hillsong Worship and Hillsong United

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza wybranych polskich tłumaczeń współczesnych angielskich pieśni uwielbienia autorstwa Hillsong Worship i Hillsong United. Praca została podzielona na dwie części: teoretyczną i praktyczną. Część teoretyczna zawiera cztery rozdziały. Pierwszy rozdział zajmuje się teorią tłumaczenia z uwzględnieniem takich zagadnień jak definicja tłumaczenia, proces tłumaczenia, metody tłumaczeniowe i nieprzetłumaczalność. Drugi rozdział traktuje o teorii tłumaczenia literackiego, wskazując jego cechy charakterystyczne, rolę tłumacza i trudności związane z tłumaczeniem tekstów literackich. Trzeci rozdział dotyczy tłumaczenia piosenek, omawiane są w nim najważniejsze teorie, zasady oraz techniki tłumaczenia tekstów muzycznych, w tym teoria skoposu i zasada Pentatlonu. Czwarty rozdział skupia się na definicji uwielbienia, cechach współczesnych pieśni uwielbienia oraz rozwoju muzyki uwielbieniowej. Część praktyczna, stanowiąca piąty rozdział, jest analizą dziesięciu wybranych współczesnych pieśni uwielbienia. Na konkretnych przykładach omawiane są techniki użyte w procesie tłumaczenia aspektów znaczeniowych i dźwiękowych piosenek. Wyniki analizy prezentowane są w odniesieniu do teorii skoposu i zasady Pentatlonu, poruszonych w pierwszej części pracy.

The subject of this thesis is the analysis of selected Polish translations of contemporary worship songs by Hillsong Worship and Hillsong United. This paper is divided into two parts: the theoretical and the practical ones. The theoretical part contains four chapters. The first chapter deals with the theory of translation, including issues such as the definition of translation, the process of translation, translation methods and untranslatability. The second chapter addresses the theory of literary translation, pointing out its characteristics, the role of the translator and the difficulties involved in translating literary texts. The third chapter is concerned with the song translation, discussing the most important theories, principles and techniques of translating musical texts, including skopos theory and the Pentathlon principle. The fourth chapter focuses on the definition of worship, the characteristics of contemporary worship songs and the development of worship music over time. The practical part, which constitutes the fifth chapter, is the analysis of ten selected contemporary worship songs by two Australian worship bands. The translation techniques used by translators when conveying meaning and conveying sound are discussed using specific examples. The results of the analysis are presented with reference to the skopos theory and Pentathlon principle, covered in the first part of the thesis.
