Pragmatyzm czy dyskretna sympatia? Polityka Stolicy Apostolskiej wobec Rewolucji narodowej Francji Vichy (1940-1944)

The present thesis examines the diplomatic policy of the Holy See towards the French State (commonly known as Vichy France) between 1940 and 1944. Initially, the paper focuses on the ideological foundations of the National Revolution, which are shown to be the teachings of Charles Maurras and the legacy of Action Française, as well as the thought of the non-conformists combined with the pragmatism of Marshal Pétain. Moreover, the research explores the approach of Pope Pius XII and the Roman Curia, characterized by a wait-and-see strategy (attentisme) and capitalizing on the benefits resulting from pro-Church reforms. The paper discusses the attitude of loyalty without subjugation of the French episcopate and Nuncio Valerio Valeri, as it manifests itself in cooperation with the authorities, but also in firm opposition when the French government participated in war crimes (forced labor, complicity in the extermination of the Jewish population). The author examines the issue of anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, ultimately concluding that there were arguments for the French government to invoke this thinker when implementing anti-Jewish legislation. An analysis of institutional conflicts (such as the failure to conclude a new concordat or the issue of the Pious Establishments in Rome) indicates that the Vatican maintained its distance and avoided deeper involvement in the political situation of Vichy. In conclusion, the paper demonstrates that the driving force behind the actions of the Church hierarchy in France was both sympathy towards the overthrow of the secular-Masonic paradigm of the Third Republic, as well as pragmatic cooperation with the legal French government.
