Polish and English ornithological technolects. A morphological and etymological inquiry into specialist lexicons

Niniejsza praca magisterska bada technolekt ornitologiczny w języku polskim i angielskim. Najpierw pokrótce przedstawione są cele i metody ornitologii terenowej jak i nawyki i zwyczaje osób obserwujących ptaki i tworzących technolekt ornitologiczny. W rozdziale drugim przedstawione są formalne i społeczne cechy technolektów. Autor najpierw definiuje samo pojecie technolektu w stosunku do podobnych mu pojęć jak żargon czy slang. Następnie przedstawione są role, jakie technolekt odgrywać może w komunikacji oraz procesy słowotwórcze, za pomocą których tworzone są terminy w językach polskim i angielskim. W następnym, trzecim rozdziale omówione są podstawowe zasady i techniki badań etymologicznych. Następnie autor przedstawia źródła etymologiczne, z których pochodzą zebrane do analizy terminy technolektów. Ostatni rozdział przedstawia wyniki analizy technolektów polskich i angielskich. Opisana jest częstotliwość używania poszczególnych procesów morfologicznych w obu językach, jak i ilość terminów wywodzących się z danego źródła etymologicznego. Przedstawione dane dla obu języków są ze sobą skontrastowane,a z porównania autor wyciąga wnioski dotyczące kultury ornitologów i ornitolożek na obszarach językowych, roli ekspresji dla osób używających technolektu i wpływu typologii języków na sposób tworzenia terminów. Zaproponowane są też dalsze kierunki badań nad technolektem ornitologicznym. Wszystkie zebrane terminy, wraz z ich opisem morfologicznym i etymologicznym zebrane są w załączniku 1.

This thesis examines the ornithological technolects in Polish and English. First, the goals and methods of field ornithology are briefly presented, as well as the habits and customs of birdwatchers and the people who participate in and create the ornithological technolect. The second chapter presents the formal and social features of technolects. The author first defines the very concept of technolect in relation to similar terms like jargon or slang. Next, the roles that technolect can play in communication and the morphological processes by which terms are created in Polish and English are presented. The following Chapter 3 presents the basic principles and tools of etymological research. The author also presents the etymological sources from which the technolect terms collected for analysis are derived. The last chapter presents the results of the analysis of Polish and English technolects. The frequency of use of particular morphological processes in both languages is described, as well as the number of terms derived from a given etymological source. The data presented for the two languages is contrasted, and from this comparison the author draws conclusions about the culture of ornithologists in the languages' areas, the role of expression for technolect users and the influence of language typology on the way terms are created. Further research directions on the ornithological technolect are also suggested. All of the collected terms, with their etymological and morphological description, are collected in Appendix 1.
