Kino Seana Bakera i antynomie realizmu społecznego

Praca analizuje kino Seana Bakera jako zjawisko kulturowe, osadza je w procesie historycznym, przygląda się społecznym i technologicznym uwarunkowaniom jego sukcesu oraz przeprowadza krytykę ideologii zawartej, po pierwsze, w formie estetycznej poszczególnych filmów, po drugie, w dyskursie ich recepcji. Na ramy metodologiczne pracy składają się materializm historyczny, wywodzące się z tej teorii strategie interpretacyjne Fredrica Jamesona oraz socjologia sztuki Pierre’a Bourdieu. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów, które fenomen kina Bakera rozpatrują na innych poziomach: 1) metod produkcji; 2) formy narracyjnej; 3) instytucji pola filmowego. Każdy rozdział identyfikuje jedną z charakterystycznych dla realizmu społecznego antynomii, z którą w dostateczny sposób uporały się filmy Bakera. Prowadzi to do szerszych wniosków na temat logiki procesu historycznego widzianego z perspektywy badanego zjawiska.

The thesis examines the cinema of Sean Baker as a cultural phenomenon, situates it within a historical process, investigates the social and technological conditions of its success, and offers an ideology critique of, first, the aesthetic form of particular films and, second, the discourse surrounding their reception. The methodological framework draws on historical materialism, Fredric Jameson’s interpretive strategies derived from this theory, and Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of art. The thesis consists of three chapters, that examine the phenomenon of Baker’s cinema at a different level: (1) modes of production; (2) narrative form; (3) the institutions of the film field. Each chapter identifies one of the antinomies characteristic of social realism, which Baker’s films manage to resolve sufficiently. This leads to broader conclusions about the logic of the historical process through the lens of the phenomenon under study.
