Culture-specific items in English translations of Andrzej Sapkowski’s works: a comparative analysis of translation techniques used by Danuta Stok and David French

Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę porównawczą technik translatorskich użytych przez dwoje różnych tłumaczy w przekładzie elementów zakorzenionych w kulturze lub silnie z nią związanych, w serii Wiedźmin Andrzeja Sapkowskiego. Wybrane elementy nacechowane polską lub słowiańską kulturą i folklorem z powieści Krew elfów oraz Czas pogardy, jak również zbiorów opowiadań Ostatnie życzenie i Miecz przeznaczenia, są poddane analizie pod względem użytych do ich przekładu technik, oraz ich funkcjonalności w ramach przekazania obecnych w oryginale kontekstów. Klasyfikacja technik translatorskich oparta jest na liście sporządzonej przez Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego (2015) oraz drugiej, autorstwa Petera Newmarka (1988), natomiast podstawą oceny funkcjonalności przekładu jest teoria ekwiwalencji formalnej i dynamicznej Eugene’a Nidy (1969) oraz udomowienia i egzotyzacji Lawrence’a Venutiego (1995). W oparciu o tę analizę praca odpowie na pytania badawcze dotyczące zarówno obecności możliwych do zauważenia tendencji translatorycznych dwojga tłumaczy, Danuty Stok oraz Davida Frencha, w ramach wspomnianych wyżej lektur, jak i adekwatności ekwiwalencji aluzji kulturowych z tekstów oryginalnych w tekstach docelowych.

The aim of this thesis is a comparative analysis of translation techniques utilised by two different translators in order to render culturally-specific and culturally-relevant elements, in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series. Elements characterised by Polish or Slavic culture and folklore, selected from the novels Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt, as well as the collections of short stories The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, are subjected to an analysis in order to determine the techniques used to translate them, as well as their functionality in terms of conveying the context present in the original. The classification of translation techniques is based on the list compiled by Krzysztof Hejwowski (2015) and another, created by Peter Newmark (1988), whereas the basis for the assessment of functionality is formed by Eugene Nida’s theory of formal and dynamic equivalence (1969) and Lawrence Venuti’s domestication and foreignisation theory (1995). Such an analysis will support the thesis in answering research questions about if there are any possible to identify translation tendencies between the two translators, Danuta Stok and David French, within the aforementioned works, as well as the adequacy of the equivalents to cultural allusions from the original in the target texts.
