Thailand during the 20th century was renowned as a new democratic nation in Southeast Asia. Freedom of expression in Thailand was once protected, but this is no longer the case. Since the 2014 coup, the restriction of freedom of expression has been one of the most discussed issues affecting human rights. The rapid increase in the prosecution of democracy activists, who are deemed a political threat by the government, highlights the ongoing debate about the extent to which freedom of expression is restricted. The deprivation of this fundamental right violates essential human rights principles. This thesis explores the impact of restrictions on freedom of expression on Thai democracy following the 2014 military coup, which marked a pivotal moment in Thailand's political history. This event led to a systematic clampdown on freedom of speech, political participation, and public discourse. The study examines how the military's role and the introduction of new laws have reshaped democratic practices, influencing political engagement, media independence, and civil society movements. By focusing on the period after the 2014 coup, this thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how freedom of expression was curtailed and how these restrictions have influenced Thailand’s democratic development. The research reveals the extent to which government power has been used to silence dissent and restrict democratic freedoms, resulting in profound implications for Thai society. This study offers valuable insights into the struggle for democratic expression in contemporary Thailand and engages with the broader challenges faced by societies striving for democratic ideals.
