An Analysis of the Translation of Culture-Specific Elements in Diana Gabaldon’s Novel Outlander from English into Polish and French

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie tłumaczenia elementów charakterystycznych dla kultury XVIII-wiecznej Szkocji w polskim i francuskim przekładzie powieści Diany Gabaldon “Outlander”. Przedmiotem analizy jest zarówno poprawność tłumaczenia, jak i techniki użyte w czasie procesu tłumaczenia powieści z języka oryginału na dwa języki docelowe. Praca została napisana w oparciu o literaturę fachową z zakresu translatoryki oraz historii, do których można zaliczyć nie tylko publikacje naukowe i czasopisma specjalistyczne, ale również słowniki i informacje dostępne na fachowych stronach internetowych, zaś materiałem badawczym były trzy wersje językowe powieści, zarówno oryginalna, jak i w dwóch wyżej wymienionych językach. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała zastosowanie różnorodnych technik tłumaczeniowych w celu należytego oddania klimatu epoki, w jakiej toczy się fabuła powieści, a jednocześnie uczynienia jej przystępną dla czytelnika spoza celtyckiego i brytyjskiego kręgu kulturowego.

This thesis, Analysis of the Translation of Cultural Elements in the Novel 'Outlander' by Diana Gabaldon from English into Polish and French, presents elements specific to the culture of 18th century Scotland and analyzes both the accuracy of their translation and the techniques applied by translators, during the process of translating the novel from the original language into two target languages. The thesis was written based on professional literature in the fields of translation studies and history, which included academic publications, specialized journals, dictionaries, and information available on specialized websites. The research material consisted of three language versions of the novel, both the original and the two languages mentioned above. The analysis carried out proved the use of a variety of translation techniques to transmit the climate of the era in which the novel's plot takes place adequately and, at the same time, make it accessible to readers outside the Celtic and British cultural circles.
