Współczesna humanistyka wysoko ceni dokumenty osobiste, które pomagają zrozumieć zarówno treść ludzkiej osobowości, jak i charakter epoki historycznej. Uczestnicy i obserwatorzy kluczowych historycznych wydarzeń — politycy, wojskowi, urzędnicy państwowi, osoby panujące — często zostawiają pisemne wspomnienia, związane ze sobą oraz epoką. W artykule rozpatrywane są dwa autobiograficzne teksty cara Mikołaja I — Zapiski i Ma confession jako dokumenty autobiograficzne, do stworzenia których car przystąpił w 1831 roku. Odzwierciedlają one osobisty, subiektywny stosunek autora do wydarzeń, uczestnikiem których był i które miały bezpośredni wpływ nie tylko na wybór jego własnej drogi życiowej, ale również na historię Rosji.

Modern humanitarian science highly appreciates the documents of the personal origin, that help to understand essence of human personality and the character of historical epoch. Participants and observers of meaningful epochal events such as politicians, defense and government officials, reigning persons — quite often abandon the written memoirs about themselves and the current epoch. In the article are considered two autobiographical texts of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I: Messages and Ma confession as documents of the personal origin, to creation of which the Emperor turned in 1831. These documents reflect the personal, subjective attitude of the author toward events, the participant of which he was, and which directly influenced on his course of life and on history of Russia.
