The thesis addresses the topic of gender roles in the rural areas of the Białowieża Forest region, which, due to its specific history, cultural diversity, and multinational character, represents an intriguing research area. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze gender roles shaped by both local traditions and external historical and social processes. The Białowieża Forest, as a cultural borderland, has been a meeting point for various ethnic groups, including Poles, Belarusians, and Ukrainians, which has further enriched the study of social structures and gender roles in this region. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts, particularly his notions of symbolic power and social, cultural, and symbolic capital, which help explain how social structures are reproduced through everyday practices and gender roles. This theory is complemented by a feminist perspective, enabling a deeper analysis of the specific conditions affecting women in rural areas. The male perspective is also included to provide as comprehensive an analysis of gender roles as possible. The methodology of the study is grounded in empirical research, including interviews conducted with local residents. These interviews provided valuable insights into how gender roles are perceived and enacted in the contemporary social life of the Białowieża Forest region. Content analysis revealed that while the region tends to preserve traditional gender roles, there are also observable processes of transformation. Women are gaining increasing agency in areas previously dominated by men, although these changes are often constrained by historical and cultural conditions, including the strong influence of patriarchal norms. The thesis also highlights the significance of the borderland as a space where gender identities are negotiated and shaped in unique ways, making this region particularly interesting from a sociological and anthropological perspective.
