The Language of Wartime Diplomacy: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Official Statements and Press Releases about Selected International Conflicts within the UN

Niniejsza praca magisterska poddaje analizie język dyplomacji wojennej w oficjalnych oświadczeniach i komunikatach prasowych wydawanych przez Organizację Narodów Zjednoczonych w kontekście dwóch współczesnych konfliktów zbrojnych: wojny rosyjsko-ukraińskiej oraz konfliktu izraelsko-palestyńskiego. Zastosowaną metodologią jest Krytyczna Analiza Dyskursu, opierająca się na dorobku Normana Fairclougha, Teuna van Dijka oraz Ruth Wodak. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy przedstawia teoretyczne podstawy CDA - historię, kluczowe pojęcia (władza, ideologia, kontekst, reprezentacja podmiotów społecznych) oraz zastosowania w badaniach nad dyplomacją i stosunkami międzynarodowymi. Rozdział drugi charakteryzuje ONZ jako instytucję dyskursywną, omawiając jej strukturę, rolę w kształtowaniu norm i moderowaniu konfliktów zbrojnych, a także specyfikę oficjalnych oświadczeń i komunikatów prasowych jako gatunku tekstowego. Rozdziały trzeci i czwarty stanowią część analityczną. Zbadano m.in. dobór leksyki, strategie reprezentacji stron oraz użycie metafor.

This master's thesis examines the language of wartime diplomacy in official statements and press releases issued by the United Nations in the context of two contemporary armed conflicts: the Russo-Ukrainian War and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The study employs Critical Discourse Analysis as its methodological framework, drawing on the works of Norman Fairclough, Teun van Dijk, and Ruth Wodak. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter presents the theoretical foundations of CDA, including its history, key concepts (power, ideology, context, and the representation of social actors), and its applications in the study of diplomacy and international relations. The second chapter characterizes the United Nations as a discursive institution, discussing its structure, its role in shaping international norms and mediating armed conflicts, as well as the specific features of official statements and press releases as a textual genre. The third and fourth chapters constitute the analytical part of the study. They examine, among other aspects, lexical choices, strategies for representing the parties to the conflicts, and the use of metaphors.
