Niniejsza praca magisterska dotyczy rozwoju kompetencji narracyjnej dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym. Część teoretyczna przedstawia definicje i strukturę narracji, jej związek z rozwojem poznawczym i emocjonalnym (teoria umysłu, pejzaż akcji i pejzaż świadomości), rolę opiekuna w kształtowaniu kompetencji narracyjnej, narzędzia stosowane do badania narracji oraz polskie badania nad narracją dziecięcą, a następnie charakterystykę narracji dzieci cztero-, pięcio- i sześcioletnich. W badaniu wzięło udział 46 jednojęzycznych dzieci (15 czterolatków, 15 pięciolatków, 16 sześciolatków) z przedszkoli w powiecie łowickim. Każde dziecko układało i opowiadało tę samą sześcioelementową historyjkę obrazkową przedstawiającą wizytę dziewczynki z dziadkami w zoo. Nagrania przepisano i zakodowano według przyjętych kategorii; analiza miała charakter opisowy i frekwencyjny, uzupełniony o jakościowe omówienie wybranych przypadków. Jednocześnie we wszystkich grupach niemal całkowicie brakuje formalnego domknięcia narracji.

This master's thesis concerns the development of narrative competence in preschool-aged children. Narrative, by simultaneously engaging linguistic, cognitive, and social resources, is one of the most sensitive indicators of a child's development, and its assessment carries both theoretical and practical significance—diagnostic and speech-therapeutic. The aim of the study was to describe how narrative competence changes between the ages of three and seven in a picture-story narration task. Competence was conceptualized multidimensionally, taking into account: the independence with which the narrative is undertaken, the completeness of the narrative macrostructure, features of the microstructure (connectives and the manner of opening the narrative), and the way in which the protagonist's emotions are described. The theoretical section presents definitions and the structure of narrative, its relationship to cognitive and emotional development (theory of mind, the landscape of action and the landscape of consciousness), the role of the caregiver in shaping narrative competence, the tools used to study narrative, and Polish research on children's narrative, followed by a characterization of the narratives of four-, five-, and six-year-old children. Forty-six monolingual children (15 four-year-olds, 15 five-year-olds, 16 six-year-olds) from preschools in the Łowicz district took part in the study. Each child arranged and narrated the same six-element picture story depicting a girl's visit to the zoo with her grandparents. The recordings were transcribed and coded according to the adopted categories; the analysis was descriptive and frequency-based, supplemented by a qualitative discussion of selected cases. The results showed that narrative competence develops clearly over the period studied, but not linearly—the individual dimensions mature at different rates. Narrative independence increases with age, but among five-year-olds it remains unstable and highly individualized. The completeness of the macrostructure increases primarily between the four-year-old and five-year-old groups, while between the five- and six-year-olds this increase almost disappears. At the same time, a formal closing of the narrative is almost entirely absent across all groups. In the microstructure, the most evident changes are the disappearance of deictic narrative openings and an increase in the proportion of causal connectives. The largest and most legible change was recorded in the way emotions are described: from general evaluative appraisals toward specific labels for emotional states and the language of the protagonist's internal states, with mental-state vocabulary appearing only in children in their sixth year of life. The two fundamental axes of development proved to be the decontextualization of language—a shift away from talking about the picture toward a text comprehensible even to a listener who has no access to the pictorial material—and the gradual incorporation of the landscape of consciousness. The results obtained, despite the limitations of the study itself (a small sample, the absence of statistical significance testing of the differences), confirm regularities known from the literature and yield practical conclusions for speech-language diagnosis: the assessment of narrative should separately evaluate the structure of events, coherence, and references to the protagonist's internal states.
