Tymczasem dyskurs polityczny, zwany w konsekwencji hegemonicznym (fr. discours politique hégémonique), znamionują dwie zasadnicze cechy. Po trzecie, zaprezentowano tu zarówno syntezę rozmaitych typologii dyskursu (m. in. Karla Bühlera, 1934; André Petitjeana, 1989; Dominique’a Maingueneau, 2002), jak i trzy fundamentalne podejścia do typologii dyskursu (Hugo Stegera, 1974; Egona Werlicha, 1982; Douglasa Bibera, 1989). Należą do nich dwa rodzaje zabiegów stylistycznych, typowych dla dyskursu prezydenckiego: dialog pozorny (fr. subjection) i pytanie retoryczne (fr. question rhétorique). Należą do nich m. in. szczególna odmiana antytezy (fr. antéisagoge), elipsa, prolepsis, anastrofa, zdanie wplecione (fr. enchâssement), syllepsis itd. Z drugiej zaś są to rozmaite zabiegi oparte na powtórzeniach bądź na nagromadzeniach pewnych elementów zdania (fr. procédés de répétition et d’accumulation), tj. anafora, reduplikacja, paralelizm składniowy, anadiploza, derywacja retoryczna itd. W trzeciej części rozprawy zajmujemy się analizą taktyki dyskursywnej Nicolasa Sarkozy’ego. Rozdział pierwszy dotyczy realizacji patosu w dyskursie prezydenta.
a) mimetyczność i intertekstualność: dyskurs zerwania (fr. discours de « rupture »); b) wyolbrzymienie i dramatyzacja: dyskurs walki (fr. discours de « combat »); c) uwrażliwienie i personalizacja: dyskurs bliskości (fr. discours de « proximité »).
Political communication is not a homogenous phenomenon. It has been addressed in numerous scientific works, and was also notably discussed in a clear, succinct, and interesting fashion by Tomasz Goban-Klas (1998). Emphasizing the interactive nature of such communication and the enunciative activity of all its participants (actors), Goban-Klas distinguishes and defines four types of political communication, one of which he dubs hegemonic communication. There are two particularities of hegemonic communication: the nature of the relationship established between its participants and the unidirectional nature of the discourse which emanates from it. Specifically, it is those who rule, acting as senders (active actors), who address their messages to the ruled, who in turn become the recipients of those messages (passive actors). Hence, the relationship which is constituted between the participants in hegemonic communication is simultaneously asymmetrical and complementary, in terms of the distribution of roles available to be played in the political space. The political discourse referred to as hegemonic is characterized by two essential features. On the one hand, there is no balanced arrangement of power: it is incumbent on those who rule, considered here as institutional and professional actors, to hold power in the name of the ruled, who are regarded as non-institutional and non-professional actors in hegemonic political communication. On the other hand, this type of political discourse is marked by the inherent relationship between the two actors: in effect, it is incumbent on the recipients of this type of discourse — namely the ruled who are perceived as passive subjects of this mode of communication — to elect those who will hold power on their behalf. This work attempts a rhetorical analysis of Nicolas Sarkozy’s hegemonic political discourse. The rhetorical effectiveness of the sixth President of the Fifth Republic stems from a particular discursive tactic, one based on the implementation of an inherent feature of hegemonic discourse, i. e. the Aristotelian category of pathos. In the discourse this work shall examine, the effects of pathos are produced by means of certain figures of speech, considered here as discursive strategies employed to arouse strong feelings in Sarkozy’s listeners: positive emotions (joy, contentment, pride, reassurance, happiness, etc.) and negative emotions (anger, exasperation, disdain, sadness, bitterness, hatred, etc.). Our study is based on a corpus comprised of roughly sixty speeches (approximately 380,000 words) made by the President both domestically and internationally between January 2007 and May 2012. For the sake of our analysis, we have collected and examined official texts: that is, speeches prepared beforehand and made in public, such as commemorative speeches, the President’s wishes, declarations, messages, etc. Additionally, we have analyzed the spontaneous discourse which encompasses interactive and off-the-cuff genres of hegemonic political discourse: TV and radio interviews, press conferences, and sound bites, ranging from less-official to utterly informal, made by Sarkozy while away from the podium and then relayed by the media. The purpose of the first part of our dissertation is to present a theoretical and conceptual framework for our analysis of Nicolas Sarkozy’s discourse regarded as an act of political communication. This communication is the result of a complex interaction between discourse, action, and power which manifests itself in diverse areas of the public space (Patrick Charaudeau 2005). This part of our work consists of three chapters, the first of which deals with major aspects of political communication: its definitions and types. The second chapter of the first part focuses on the notion of discourse as it is widely described in linguistics. Firstly, it offers a review of the definitions that can be found in English, French and Polish dictionaries. Secondly, the notion of discourse is examined in relation to communication and a number of theories derived from pragmatics and social semiotics are characterized. Thirdly, we present some discourse typologies, referring back to Karl Bühler’s Organon model (1934) and the typologies put forward by André Petitjean (1989) and Dominique Maingueneau (2002). It is also in this chapter that we address three fundamental approaches to discourse typology (Steger, 1974; Werlich, 1982; and Biber, 1989). The last part of the second chapter is devoted to a brief examination of notions of class and genre in discourse, from the perspectives of discourse analysis, text analysis, and semiotics. We have emphasized the historical review of rhetorical genres to further our discussion of the main aspects of rhetorical analysis of discourse. The second chapter ends with a synthesis of theories and approaches which constitutes a theoretical basis for our rhetorical analysis of the corpus. The third theoretical chapter deals with the hegemonic political discourse of our times which is the core of our research. Firstly, we present the definitional framework of political discourse, relating to several disciplines: sociology, anthropology, political science, linguistics, etc. Secondly, we focus on the crucial aspects of so-called hegemonic political discourse, such as the actors and categories inherent to it. Thirdly, we present the corpus and research methodology used in our analysis of Sarkozy’s discourse. We should like to highlight at this point that the excerpts of our corpus are collected in volume II (annexe n˚ 2). This volume also contains a recapitulation chart of the Sarkozy speeches analyzed in this dissertation (annexe n˚ 1), as well as a CD containing complete texts of all the speeches examined (annexe n˚ 3).
The second part examines the main figures of speech in Sarkozy’s discourse according to the classification developed by Jean-Jacques Robrieux (2000). We present here the outcome of our rhetorical analysis of the corpus, within which we have managed to distinguish two categories of linguistic devices. This part of our work is comprised of two chapters, the first of which discusses the figures of thought in the President’s discourse. There are two groups of these figures: figures of intensity (mainly hyperbolic exaggerations of reality used pejoratively), and figures of enunciation and dialectic aimed principally at manipulating the recipient (most especially, fallacious dialogues and rhetorical questions).
In the second chapter, we focus on two groups of syntactic figures of speech that can be tracked in Sarkozy’s discourse. These are, first, symmetrical and asymmetrical constructions such as ellipsis, prolepsis, anastrophe, parenthetic clause, etc., and second, linguistic devices based on either repetition or accumulation (e. g., anaphora, reduplication, parallelism, etc.). In the third part of this dissertation, we examine Sarkozy’s discursive tactics. The first chapter deals with the implementation of pathos in the President’s discourse. To start with, we take into account the notion of pathos, as it is elaborated on in rhetoric and discourse analysis. Next, we delve into the affective dimension of Sarkozy’s speeches which are composed of a variety of the linguistic devices analyzed previously, and consider their relationship to values such as democracy, solidarity, peace, family, security, etc. Finally, we scrutinize those rhetorical devices which contribute to arousing both positive and negative emotions in the discourse studied.
Having analyzed the discursive effects of pathos as a mode of persuasion in Sarkozy’s discourse, we then proceed to discuss the ways Sarkozy’s discourse creates an ethos by means of pathos. We begin by offering a concise historical review of the notion of ethos. Later, the same concept is dealt with in the context of rhetorical analysis alone. Next, the pre-discursive and discursive ethos of the President are tackled in detail. As regards the latter, we have focused on so-called enunciative devices which aim to reinforce the figures of Sarkozy’s oratorical ethos of emotional identification and render it both dynamic and bellicose in character.
In light of our research into Sarkozy’s speeches, four figures of oratorical ethos have been singled out as typical characteristics of the President’s discourse: the ethos of solidarity, the ethos of humanity, the ethos of the strong character, and the ethos of the charismatic leader. The discursive ethos of the sender needs to conform to the expectations and desires of the recipient if the discourse is to be persuasive. The key is to bridge the gap between the two realms (that of the politician and that of the citizen) which are believed to share a common denominator: the system of values that binds them together.
To sum up, our research on Sarkozy’s hegemonic political discourse has proven that the particularity of that discourse stems from an immense emotive dimension which underlies the discursive ethos of the speaker. A rhetorical analysis of the corpus collected enables us to examine two major categories of the figures of speech that appear to be typical of the President’s discourse and which aim to generate a great number of feelings. In Sarkozy’s discourse, which is far from being homogenous, strong emotions are derived from both positive and negative pathos: pathos, specifically, is where one can see this discourse evolve. As far as positive pathos is concerned, Sarkozy’s mechanism of communication consists of compassion and volunteerism, each of which are activated by three types of emotive arguments: arguments ad populum, arguments ad vanitatem and arguments ad verecundiam. With respect to negative pathos, Sarkozy’s discursive tactics seem to be based upon the evocation of suffering in particular. Suffering is systematically invoked through the semantic field of condemnation, using four types of emotive arguments: arguments ad personam, arguments ad hominem, arguments ad misericordiam and arguments ad baculum.
As a result, it is through those discursive tactics which appear to favor pathos over logos that we have come to discover several evolutionary characteristics of this type of discourse. In light of the rhetorical analysis presented in this work, we find it worth noting that Sarkozy’s presidential discourse, which aims to be “clear and authentic,” tends to evolve, perhaps paradoxically, into three major directions which can be regarded as its three paired features and/or techniques: • mimetism and intertextuality (the discourse of “rupture?”); • exaggeration and dramatization (the discourse of “combat?”); • sensitivity-fostering and personalization (the discourse of “proximity”).
