Hellenism in a rear-view mirror: reinterpretations of mythological heroines in nineteenth-century British potery and art

Ówczesna fascynacja starożytnymi Grekami jest obecnie rozważana głównie w kontekście literatury fin de siècle z pominięciem wcześniejszych dekad, co przyczynia się do stosunkowo powierzchownego rozumienia hellenizmu w dziewiętnastowiecznej Wielkiej Brytanii.

This thesis focuses on the reinterpretations of mythological heroines in nineteenth-century British poetry and art. The Victorian fascination with ancient Greece is mainly considered in the context of fin de siècle literature and that contributes to a partial and relatively superficial understanding of Hellenism in nineteenth-century Britain. The study examines various poetic and pictorial revisions of Medea, Persephone, and Circe, revealing a provocative interplay between text and image, which for nineteenth-century artists created the opportunity to explore the dynamics between literature, art, and social engagement.
