Anthropocene Nostalgia in Twenty-First-Century American Visual Culture

Celem niniejszej rozprawy jest gruntowne zbadanie tego, w jaki sposób (i do jakiego stopnia) postrzeganie antropocenu jako znaku trwałych zmian klimatycznych wpłynęło na nostalgię w tekstach amerykańskiej kultury wizualnej XXI wieku. W tym celu, analizuję wybrane serie fotografii, seriale i wizualne projekty artystyczne. Biorąc pod uwagę, że antropocen jest nie tylko zjawiskiem geologicznym, ale także politycznym, społecznym i kulturowym, transformacje, jakie wywołuje w tych obszarach, są równie ważne, jak przyczyny jego powstania. Twierdzę, że na początku XXI wieku powstał nowy rodzaj nostalgii, wynikający z uznania antropocenu jako istotnego i nieodwracalnego zagrożenia. Sentyment ten (który nazwałam „antropoceńską nostalgią”) różni się od dojmującej tęsknoty za minionym czasem, jak powszechnie definiuje się nostalgię. W przeciwieństwie do jej innych i przeszłych form, wykorzystuje ona estetykę ubiegłych dekad, proponując bardziej krytyczne spojrzenie na minione lata. Postawa ta jest wyrażana poprzez gorzkie przedstawienie przeszłości, kiedy to natura była bezmyślnie lekceważona, dogłębną rewaluację energochłonnych praktyk i zjawisk, które niegdyś uznawano za ikoniczne, oraz dokładne odwzorowanie estetyki minionych epok.

This dissertation offers an in-depth examination of how, and to what extent, public awareness of the Anthropocene—as a sign of accelerating, human-made climate change—has altered nostalgia, which is manifested in contemporary American visual culture. To achieve that, I analyze selected American photography series, television series, and visual art projects. Given that the Anthropocene is not only a geological phenomenon but also a political, social, and cultural one, the transformations it induces in these areas are as important as the causes of its emergence. I argue that at the beginning of the twenty-first century, a new type of nostalgia has emerged—one that stems from the acknowledgment of the Anthropocene as a threat that is both imminent and irreversible. This sentiment—which I refer to as an “Anthropocene nostalgia”— differs from the universal, wistful longing for the past, as nostalgia is commonly understood. Unlike its previous and other forms, Anthropocene nostalgia refers to the previous decades to offer a more critical approach toward bygone years. This attitude is expressed through a bitter representation of the past, when nature was recklessly disregarded, a poignant reevaluation of energy-intensive practices and phenomena that were once deemed iconic and a mindful rendering of past visual styles.
