Paris Is Burning – analysis of the queer language and challenges that emerge in the translation attempt

Niniejsza praca ma na celu zbadanie języka queerowego i trudności tłumaczeniowych występujących w trakcie jego tłumaczenia na przykładzie filmu Paris Is Burning (1990). Praca składa się z części teoretycznej i praktycznej. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono szerszy kontekst kulturowy kształtowania się społeczności queerowej poprzez zaprezentowanie wyboru literatury na przestrzeni wieków, a później także rozwoju queerowej filmografii. Następny rozdział skupia się na zagadnieniach związanych ściśle z tłumaczeniem. Najpierw porusza on temat tłumaczenia queerowego – różnych możliwych podejść do tego tematu, a także wskazuje techniki tłumaczeniowe, które mogą być przydatne przy tłumaczeniu slangu queerowego. Następnie zwraca uwagę na wielokulturowy aspekt queerowości, wskazuje, jaki wpływ może mieć on na tłumaczenie i jakie strategie tłumaczeniowe można wykorzystać w tym przypadku. Na końcu znajdują się uwagi o specyfice tłumaczenia audiowizualnego. W trzecim rozdziale zaprezentowana została analiza języka queerowego w filmie dokumentalnym Paris Is Burning. Wyselekcjonowane terminy slangowe zostały wyjaśnione z uwzględnieniem kontekstu kulturowego, a przy wybranych kwestiach zostało zaproponowane potencjalne ich tłumaczenie. Na tej podstawie omówiono wyzwania tłumaczeniowe. Przeprowadzona analiza przedstawia zarówno trudności, jak i sposoby radzenia sobie z nimi, udowadnia znaczenie tłumaczenia queerowego we współczesnym świecie i wskazuje dziedziny z potencjałem na dalsze badania.

This thesis aims to analyze the queer language and the difficulties that arise during its translation. It consists of a theoretical and a practical section. In the first chapter, the broader cultural context of the formation of the queer community is given. It is done by presenting an overview of the literature over the centuries, as well as by showcasing the development of queer filmography. The next chapter focuses on the issues closely related to translation. First, it addresses the topic of queer translation – the different possible approaches to the topic, as well as translation techniques that can be useful when translating the queer slang. Then, it points to the multicultural aspect of queerness, how it can impact the translation and what strategies can be used in this case. Lastly, it describes the characteristics of the audiovisual translation. In the third chapter, the analysis of the queer language in Paris Is Burning (1990) is presented. Selected slang terms are explained with the inclusion of the cultural context in which they exist, and for chosen lines a suggested translation is provided. On their basis, the translation challenges are discussed. The conducted analysis presents the encountered difficulties and proposes different ways of tackling them, it proves the importance of queer translation in the modern world and points to the areas of study with the potential for further research.
