From the 1820's onwards, Thaddeus Bulgarin ranked among the most popular writers in Russia Adam Mickiewicz met him during his exile, when he spent time in Petersburg on several occasions. Bulgarin used the pages of the widely-read daily "Severnaya Pchela" and the periodical "Severnyi Arkhiv" to promote Mickiewicz's works and also undertook to have Konrad Wallenrod published in St. Petersburg. As an influential person in the Third Section, he not only had a hand in boosting Mickiewicz's popularity in Russia, but also defended him from assaults by Nikolay Nowosiltsov. Through the good offices of Bulgarin, Mickiewicz obtained a passport allowing him to leave the Russian Empire.
