Translation of Humour in the Polish Dubbed and Subtitled Version of the ‘Inside Job’ Netflix Series

Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę przykładów tłumaczenia humoru w serialu komediowym Inside Job. Analizie poddano tłumaczenie humoru w polskiej wersji językowej zarówno w formie dubbingu jak i napisów. Praca została podzielona na dwie główne części: teoretyczną i praktyczną. Część teoretyczna składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich dotyczy teorii tłumaczenia. Obejmuje on definicje i klasyfikacje tłumaczenia, ekwiwalencji, strategii oraz technik tłumaczeniowych. Drugi rozdział dotyczy tłumaczenia audiowizualnego. Obejmuje on definicję i podział tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, a także teorie, etapy i wyzwania związane z dubbingiem i napisami. Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest tłumaczeniu humoru. Obejmuje on trzy teorie humoru: teorię wyższości, niespójności oraz uwalniania napięcia, a także wyzwania związane z tłumaczeniem humoru oraz dwie klasyfikacje technik tłumaczeniowych wykorzystywanych do tłumaczenia humoru. Rozdział czwarty stanowi część praktyczną niniejszej pracy. Składa się on z czterech części. Pierwszą z nich jest opis analizowanego serialu, w którym znajdują się najważniejsze informacje na jego temat. Druga sekcja to cele badawcze i metodologia, która przedstawia środki analizy serialu i proponowane hipotezy. Trzecia sekcja to analiza jakościowa tłumaczenia humoru w serialu. Każdy przykład został opatrzony krótkim opisem. Rozdział czwarty to wnioski do części praktycznej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem strategii i technik tłumaczeniowych omówionych w części teoretycznej. Rozdział ten składa się z odniesienia do wcześniej postawionych hipotez oraz wniosków na temat polskiego dubbingu oraz napisów powyższego serialu.

This thesis was aimed to analyse the examples of humour translation in the Netflix sitcom “Inside Job”. Both Polish dubbed and subtitled version of the selected jokes were scrutinised. The thesis is divided into two major parts: the theoretical one and the empirical one. The theoretical part consists of three chapters. The first one addresses translation theory. It comprises definitions and taxonomies of translation, equivalence, translation strategies and techniques. The second chapter encompasses audiovisual translation. It comprehends a definition and taxonomy of audiovisual translation, as well as, theories, stages and challenges of dubbing and subtitling. The third chapter is devoted to humour translation. It comprises three theories of humour: superiority theory, incongruity theory and relief theory, challenges connected with translating humour and two classifications of translation techniques used to translate humour. The fourth chapter constitutes the empirical part of this thesis. It consists of four sections. The first section is a description of the analysed series, where the most essential information about this show may be found. The second section constitutes research aims and methodology, which depicts he measures of the analysis of the show and proposed hypotheses. The third section is the qualitative analysis of the humour translation of the show. Each example comes along with a brief description. The fourth section constitute conclusions to the empirical part, which are presented in respect of the translation strategies and techniques characterized in the theoretical part of thesis. It not only comments on the earlier drawn hypotheses but also encapsulates the main aspects of dubbing and subtitling of the show.
