Lamentation dans la littérature polémique aux temps des guerres de religion en France

Celem dysertacji jest analiza lamentu w literaturze polemicznej okresu wojen religijnych we Francji. Szesnastowieczny dyskurs polemiczny postrzega się jako fenomen poprzedzający debatę publiczną w nowoczesnych społeczeństwach. W swojej pracy chcę odwrócić tę perspektywę i pokazać, w jaki sposób polemika czerpie z poetycko-retorycznej tradycji dyskursu prawdy. Ponadto podkreślam pacyfikacyjną siłę literatury polemicznej, którą uważa się niemal jednomyślnie za mowę nienawiści (hate speech). W dysertacji analizuję teksty polemiczne z punktu widzenia skargi, którą rozumiem, z jednej strony, jako wyraz cierpienia, a z drugiej, jako próbę wzbudzenia litości. Przedmiotem moich rozważań są francuskie teksty polemiczne z drugiej połowy XVI wieku, w których opłakuje się polityczny i religijny kryzys. Praca została podzielona na cztery rozdziały. Pierwszy z nich jest poświęcony etosowi polemicznemu – cierpienie staje się dla autorów polemicznych wewnętrznym imperatywem, który legitymizuje ich wypowiedź. W tej części pracy analizie poddane zostały następującefigury polemiczne : poeta ogarnięty platońskim szałem, prorok oraz tzw. « prawdziwy Francuz » przejęty losem swojego kraju. W drugim rozdziale, podejmuję problematykę gatunków poetyckich, które były inspiracją dla lamentu polemicznego. Niektóre gatunki lamentacyjne, dobrze zakorzenione w zachodniej tradycji literackiej, stały się dla autorów polemicznych źródłem poetyckiej konwencji oraz toposów upadku i żalu. Przedmiotem moich analiz jest literatura bukoliczna, lamenti storici opłakujące upadek miast, skarga alegoryczna, tragedia oraz gatunek mieszany, tzw. « gélodacrye » (z gr. gelos – śmiech, dakruon – łzy). W trzecim rozdziale analizuję retorykę lamentu na podstawie przykładów retoryki królewskiej, prawnej oraz kaznodziejstwa. W ostatnim rozdziale podejmuję natomiast problem natury dyskursu polemicznego i staram się zrozumieć specyfikę lamentu jako szczególnego rodzaju sztuki polemicznej (ars polemica).

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze lamentation in polemical literature during the French Wars of Religion. We tend to see early modern polemics as a phenomenon preceding the public debate in a modern society. I want to challenge this perspective and argue that polemical literature is nourished by a rich rhetorical and poetic tradition of truthful discourse. Secondly, I intend to stress the appeasing power of polemicalliterature, typically conceived as « hate speech ». I approach the corpus of polemical texts through the complaint, which I understand to be, on one hand, an expression of sorrow, and on the other the appeal to pity. My principal sources include prints published in the second half of the 16th century deploring religious and political conflicts. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, I examinethe polemical ethos. For polemical authors, the suffering becomes an internal imperative that legitimizes their discourse. I take into consideration the following polemical figures : the inspired poet, the prophet, and the citizen (a « good Frenchman ») concerned by the future of his country. In the second chapter, I analyze the poetic antecedents of polemical lamentation. Certain literary genres, deeply rooted in Western poetic tradition, became the source of poetic convention for polemical authors and a gold mine of common places of decline and regret. Bucolic literature, the allegorical complaint, the lamenti storici deploring the fall of cities, the tragedy and the so-called « gélodacrye » (a contemporary French neologism meaning laughter and tears combined) are the subject of my analysis. In the third chapter, I focus on the rhetorics of lamentation and I study samples of royal and judicial eloquence as well as of pulpit oratory. In the last chapter, I explore the nature of polemical discourse and I try to understand the specificity of lamentation as a polemical art (ars polemica).
