This paper focuses on written and visual disinformation analyzed on the basis of texts and photographs. The sources for the research are the Internet (using various search engines and websites) and social media. The aim of the study is to analyze the methods and describe the functionality of tools that can be used in the fight against disinformation, i.e., those that allow for its detection and verification. Methodology refers to an orderly and systematic set of methods, rules, and procedures that are used to achieve a specific goal—in this case, to detect disinformation. The Internet, as understood in the title, is a global computer network connecting local networks using the TCP/IP packet communication protocol, with uniform rules for addressing and naming nodes (computers connected to the network) and protocols for sharing information. A distinction was made between methods, understood as consciously and consistently applied procedures designed to achieve the intended goal of combating disinformation, and tools, understood as online tools (including programs and websites) used to detect and verify disinformation. The work can be used by journalists, international organizations, law enforcement agencies, analysts, researchers, foundations dealing with information in the broad sense, and ordinary people interested in the subject of detecting disinformation. The thesis is divided into five chapters that systematically analyze various aspects of combating disinformation. The first chapter presents an analysis of the concept of disinformation, taking into account its historical roots, contemporary understanding, and the author's definition. The second chapter focuses on methods of counteracting disinformation, including fact-checking institutions, linguistic analysis of disinformation texts, and methods available to individual users. The third and fourth chapters discuss classic tools for detecting disinformation and AI-based tools, respectively, including network analysis tools. The last chapter is devoted to visual analysis tools, including technologies for recognizing image manipulation and deepfake material. The work can be useful for journalists, international organizations, law enforcement agencies, analysts, researchers, and anyone interested in the topic of disinformation detection.
