An analysis of manipulative discourse in Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla”.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza dyskursu manipulacyjnego Carmilli, tytułowej bohaterki gotyckiej noweli autorstwa Josepha Sheridana Le Fanu. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono temu, w jaki sposób Carmilla wpływa na emocje, decyzje oraz zachowania Laury, głównej bohaterki utworu. Praca składa się z dwóch rozdziałów. W pierwszym omówiono definicje manipulacji oraz dyskursu manipulacji, a także przedstawiono strategie manipulacji i środki retoryczne, które mogą być wykorzystane w dyskursie manipulacji. W drugim rozdziale zaprezentowano kontekst utworu i nakreślono relacje między bohaterkami, a także dokonano analizy dialogów między Carmillą a Laurą z wybranych fragmentów zawartych w rozdziałach 3-5 noweli Le Fanu. Analiza rozmów między bohaterkami wykazała, że Carmilla konsekwentnie stosuje liczne strategie manipulacji oraz środki retoryczne mające na celu kontrolowanie Laury i wpływanie na jej emocje, a także budowanie relacji zależności. Analiza podkreśliła również kluczową rolę języka w procesie manipulacji.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the manipulative discourse of Carmilla, the eponymous character of the gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Special attention is given to the ways in which Carmilla influences the emotions, decisions, and behavior of Laura, the novella’s main character. This thesis is divided into two chapters. The first chapter defines manipulation and manipulative discourse and outlines various strategies of manipulation and rhetorical devices that can be employed in such discourse. The second chapter provides the narrative context of the novella, explores the relationship between the two heroines, and analyzes selected dialogues between Carmilla and Laura from Chapters 3 to 5 of Le Fanu’s work. The analysis of these conversations reveals that Carmilla consistently employs a range of strategies of manipulation and rhetorical devices to control Laura, influence her emotions, and establish a relationship of dependency. The study also emphasizes the central role of language in the process of manipulation.
