Abstrakt (EN)
The subject of the article is the transition of the Polish banking system in the years 1990-2008. The article presents the steps in the development of the banking system, the stability of banks and their resilience to crisis shocks. It shows the ownership structure of the Polish banking sector, the capital strengthening and the creation of the financial security network: banking supervision, deposit guarantee system, strengthening the position and tasks of the central bank – the National Bank of Poland. The study consists of three parts: the first presents theoretical considerations on the importance of stability and reliability of the banking system as a public good, the second - the processes of reconstruction, ownership changes and capital strengthening of the banking sector as an important element of the transformation of the Polish economy, the third – analyzes the safety net institutions and their importance in creating the stability of the banking system and its resilience to crisis shocks.
