Problemy macierzyństwa w ujęciu Bolesława Prusa. Na przykładzie „Emancypantek”

Praca na przykładzie Emancypantek ukazuje, jaki obraz macierzyństwa kreował Bolesław Prus w swojej twórczości. Koncentruje się na postaci pani Latter i doktorowej Brzeskiej, które są przedstawione między innymi w kontekście relacji z główną bohaterką, Magdaleną Brzeską, i reprezentują różne typy macierzyństwa. Pani Latter łączy wychowanie dzieci z pracą zawodową, doktorowa całkowicie poświęca się sprawom rodzinnym. Ważnym kontekstem macierzyństwa jest tutaj rodzenie się nowoczesnego społeczeństwa, zmiana pozycji kobiety i większa świadomość tego, jak działa ludzka psychika. XIX wiek był czasem odchodzenia od wyidealizowanego obrazu matki, który utrzymywał się przez wiele lat i częściowo nadal funkcjonuje w wyobrażeniach kulturowych. Prus pokazuje jednak, że przemiany obyczajowe, jakie mogli obserwować jego współcześni, sprawiły, że macierzyństwo stało się trudniejsze i mogło wpływać destrukcyjnie na jednostkę. Emancypantki są przedstawieniem projektu macierzyństwa, które autor uważa za korzystne dla społeczeństwa. Prus sugeruje jednak równocześnie, że wprowadzenie w życie zmian w tym zakresie nie jest możliwe.

Based on the example of Emancypantki, this work showcases the image of motherhood in Bolesław Prus’ literary works. The main focus is on the characters of Mrs. Latter and Mrs. Brzeska – a doctor’s wife, who are presented, among others, in the context of their relationship with the main character, Magdalena Brzeska, and represent different types of motherhood. Mrs. Latter combines raising children with professional work, while the doctor’s wife devotes herself entirely to familial matters. An important context of motherhood here is the birth of modern society, the change in women’s place within it, and a greater awareness of the human psyche’s internal mechanisms. The 19th century was a time of moving away from the idealized image of the mother, which had persisted for many years and is still partly present in cultural imaginations. However, Prus points out that the changes in customs, which his contemporaries could observe, made motherhood more difficult and could have a destructive effect on the individual. Emancypantki is a presentation of the project of motherhood, which the author considers beneficial for society. At the same time, Prus suggests that implementing the presented changes is not possible.
