Niniejsza praca licencjacka skupia się na dokumencie fotograficznym jako narzędziu do uwieczniania i badania zmian społeczno-demograficznych na przykładzie postępującej destrukcji tradycyjnej architektury drewnianej w przygranicznych gminach Podlasia. Punktem wyjścia jest charakterystyka Podlasia jako wielokulturowego regionu pogranicza, ukształtowanego przez wieki wspólnej historii Polaków, Białorusinów, Ukraińców, Litwinów, Tatarów i Żydów. W pracy omówiono definicje regionu, pochodzenie jego nazwy oraz procesy historyczne, które doprowadziły do powstania wyjątkowej mozaiki etnicznej i językowej. Podkreślono, że Podlasie to kraina, w której tożsamość mieszkańców jest złożona, a lokalne gwary i tradycje wciąż żyją. W dalszej części pracy przedstawiona jest historia tradycyjnej architektury drewnianej Podlasia. Opisano rodzaje domów, techniki budowlane, a przede wszystkim unikalne, bogate zdobnictwo, które to nierzadko ulegają dziś stopniowej destrukcji. Kluczowym elementem pracy jest analiza fotografii dokumentalnej. Przedstawiono ją jako medium o podwójnej naturze: artystycznej i naukowej. Trzon pracy stanowi część praktyczna, składająca się z 53 fotografii przedstawiających obecny stan destrukcji drewnianej architektury na południowym Podlasiu.

The present thesis focuses on the photographic document as a tool for capturing and studying socio-demographic changes on the example of the progressive destruction of traditional wooden architecture in the border communes of southern Podlasie. The starting point is the characterization of Podlasie as a multicultural borderland region, shaped by centuries of shared history between Poles, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Tatars, and Jews. The Definitions of the region, the origin of its name, and the historical processes that led to the creation of a unique ethnic and linguistic mosaic were presented. The thesis emphasizes that Podlasie is a land where the identity of its inhabitants is complex and local dialects and traditions are still alive. The history of traditional wooden architecture in Podlasie is also discussed. It includes the types of houses, construction techniques, and, above all, the unique, rich ornamentation, which is now often in the process of destruction. A key element of the work is the analysis of documentary photography. It is presented as a medium with a dual nature: artistic and scientific. The core of the work is the practical part, consisting of 53 photographs showing the current state of destruction of traditional wooden architecture in southern Podlasie.
